69gr sierra hpbt on coyote ??

I know these bullets are made to shoot paper with but the accuracy my savage shoots them with makes me want too. Has anyone shot a coyote with a 223 and the 69 grainer ? If so please relate how the bullet did. I don't think it will expand much but I have been wrong before.    Dave

I shot a deer with a HPBT 123gr from a 762x39.  It completely broke apart inside.  It was a front chest shot at about 15yds.  Nicked the heart and I had to shoot it again as it ran away.  But that is not a fair accounting because it was a huge 240lb doe and it was pumped up running.  I would not use it again on a deer, but on a coyote, why not?

I doubt that you will have the velocity nessary to get the bullets to expand properly in a .223. I like the 80 gr. Sierra Match bullets in my .224 TTH, but I am pushing them at 3,250 fps. and they make real big holes. Witn the .223 you just don`t have the velocity to get them to expand at longer yardages.

I used to have a link to an online article in which they tested a bunch of different .223 bullets. If I remember correctly in the article they said that the 69gr. Sierra Matchking HPBT was one of the slowest ones to expand. Again if I remember correctly the article went on to say that the 68gr. Hornady BTHP expanded much better, but still penetrated as far.

I have read (on another forum) where guys were using the 68gr. Hornady BTHP Match Bullets with good results on Whitetails. I would think they would work OK on Coyotes.

Personally I prefer the 55gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips pushed to 2947 FPS out of my 16" Bushmaster M4 Optics Ready Carbine for Coyotes. In shooting 18 Coyotes with this Bushmaster so far with this load I have yet to have one get away.

If yoour looking for some good bullets cheap try thr Mid South Varmint Nitemares. I have been useing the 55 gr. bullets in my AR for 3 years now. They are alittle soft, but a hit just about any where will knock a coyote down. A hit in the boiler room and they stay down, but they will not keep them down with a Texas eye ball shot. I put one down 3 times Firday before he would stay down long enough for me to put the killing shot on it. I think the first 2 shot were in about the same place, low and back, because when he got up after the 2 knock down he was catching his hind foot on his guts. That is the only one so far that I shot up that bad with these bullet as untill that one I only had 1 bullet pass through a coyote and that bullet was a boiler room shot and went in between the ribs and left an exit hole of about 3 in.

A 70gr bullet for a Coyote?  If I didn't know better I would think this was a joke post!  These are tiny little dogs, a 17 cal 25 gr bullet is over kill, they are not 7 inches thick when you take the skin off.  If you applied the same thinking you would need a 50 BMG to kill a White Tail.  These posts are just amazing to me.  Larry

Many coyotes are taken with a 60-gr Sierra Blitz King bullet in the .223.

Thanks for the replies, except for the useless one. I wanted to know if a match bullet(the 69gr MK) would expand on game as light as a coyote. I'm sure a 223 has the power for coyote. I've proven to a few people that a 45gr X bullet(fired from a 22-250) can break both shoulders of a whitetail, so no I don't need a 50 BMG to kill a whitetail.   Dave

I'm sure it will expand at least some, probably just before it comes out the other side leaving a hole you could throw a cat through.  Good thing is that it will kill the Coyote, as far as being suited for the task I guess my answer is useless.  Lots of deer have been taken by a 22 LR, doesn't make it a proper round for the task however.  Larry

IN the last 2 days 3 yotes at distances from 45 yards to 185 yards with black hills red box of 69grn match out of a dpms 24" super bull barrel, the closet ran and stubled about 10 yards, the one at 185 was a large male and the shot was in the neck and fell DRT.
