New H&R 270
« on: December 06, 2007, 12:31:27 PM »
Just picked up my first rifle.

H&R Handi .270 had a Leupold VX-I  3X9X40 scope mounted.

I'm just itching to go shoot.

Any recomendation on what ammo to shoot?  Expecting most shots under 200yds .

Im going to add a rifled slug barrel and turkey barrel.

Welcome!! I'd give the Federal Fusion or Power-Shoks a shot, they seem to be very good in just about any H&R, Federal is offering up to $10 rebate on two boxes right now, at the price of ammo, that's hard to pass up. The Remington Core-lokt ammo is also favored, same with the rebates too. ;)

Let us know how it does.
I'm thinking of trading of a ruger 270 and thought about replacing it with a handi.

Another vote for Federal Power-Shoks.  I've used the 130's with excellent results.  Haven't used Fusions in the .270 yet, but they do well in my .280.      :)

One more vote for the power shocks. They have shot great in all of the rifles I've tried them in. I think my next handi will be a .270 also let us know how yours does.

I ended up with a used 270 for $200 at the range Sunday myself ... #7 in my Handi collection. Long story short, fella said it wouldn't shoot for him. That's partly because he had a $29.99 Bushnell Sharpshooter 3x9 scope on it. It had 5 130 grain Remington Core-Lokts in the cartridge carrier so I tried them out. First shot was 2" left out of a cold, clean barrel. Next 3 blew the center out of the bulls eye at 100 yards and the last shot from a hot barrel was 2" right. He said he'd take a check so I left with it. Put my tough as nails fixed 4x32 mm beater scope on it till I decide which scope to buy. Got a box each of 130 gr Core-Lokts, Power Shoks and Power Points to try out this weekend. Of course I'm also fire forming brass for the dies I haven't bought yet. That 270 is a shooter.

Thanks everyone.  Picked up 2 boxes of power shoks.  Off to the range tomorrow. Will let you know how it goes.

I'm learning a lot from this forum.

Hi All; I'm new to GBO and this is my first post. I felt I had to add my experience with the NEF's. I currently own 5 of them, 17 M2, 17 HMR, 22 LR, 22Mag., & 25-06. All these rifles shoot exceptionally well, However, I purchased a 270 a couple of months ago and could never get it to group under 6" at 100 yds. I tried three different scopes and both factory & reloaded ammo. I didn't want to alter the rifle so I ended up trading it off. Also a few years ago I had a 223 that I couldn't get to group. I feel they are a bit inconsistent with their accuracy. I'm not trying to start an argument I'm just relaying my experience.

Welcome nodlenor and that's OK, every rifle manufacturer has a bad one now and then. The used 270 I just bought was like that. The old boy I bought it from had sanded the forend, put an O ring on the barrel lug and polished the barrel. First thing I did was change the scope which brought a 4 inch group down to 3 inches. Then I took out the O ring and put leather strips in front of and behind the forend lug hole and immediately got 1 inch groups with 130 grain Remington's. You never know, every rifle is different. Some take more tweaking than others and most none at all. But, if I hadn't gotten this one to shoot, I know where to get another barrel  ;D.

If the FAQs and Help info doesn't get you where you want, H&R Customer Service is second to none when it comes to getting a factory fitted barrel to shoot good, no need to loose money selling it when they'll fix it right or refund your money or replace it if they can't get it to shoot well, their reputation is impeccable, they'll even cover return shipping costs if you ask.  ;)

Thanks for the replies & info. If I had found this forum & it hadn't been so close to deer season I might have taken a different route with it and tried to get it shooting better. It did cost me some extra money but I like the rifle I have now and have learned something from the experience.

well i put 40 rounds through it this weekend. after tweaking the scope its shooting 3" groups off a sand bag at 100 & 200 yds. so I'm happy with it. I'm sure ill get better with some practice. for now it will smack a deer. taking it out hunting tomorrow
