25-06 - To crimp or not
« on: July 03, 2003, 02:14:37 PM »
I never crimp bottleneck rifle case to shoot in my single shot.  Noticed my Hornady 100gr for my 25-06 have a crimp groove.  I did not crimp as is my standard.  However since I am using IMR 4831 which is about the slowest powder made, should I crimp to get good ignition with the slow powder?

Thanks!

I use the same powder in mine and never crimp. But I never have used a bullet with a groove either. I would say a light crimp can't hurt.  KN

Bullseye...

Crimping isn't necesary in a .25/06.  Doing so will likely raise your chamber pressure... not the best of ideas.

Bullseye:

Dittos on the above... No need to crimp.  I depend on neck sizing cases fired in my rifle to hold up under the mild recoil of the 25-06, and large rifle primers, not magnums, to light the IMR 4350.  Long ago and far away I came up with five boxes of (100 each) of the Hornaday 100 grainers at an estate sale.  I loaded 'em so the cannelure just showed on the finished round.  I've shot all but 50 or so and never had one shoved into the case from recoil.  (They're deadly on old apples and oranges).  :)

Thanks for the info all.  I will give these loads a test at the range Friday.  I loaded groups of 5 and varied the charge.  The gun shoots factory stuff good, just need to find the right home brew.

I never crimp mine and get sub MOA accuracy with certain loads.  I have had great results with IMR 4891 and another is RL 22.

Have Fun
