30-30 and 165 grain Balistic Tips
« on: December 12, 2007, 02:01:28 PM »
Just wondering how fast I can get these bullets going out of a 23 inch barrel from my Contender and if anybody thinks they will expand out to 200 yards or so. I figure at least 2200 fps maybe 2300 fps. Seems like this would make a good rifle for stand hunting.

As I recall that is JD's bullet of choice for the .309 JDJ. I think the .309 JDJ will push it out at about 2400-2500 fps at least. The .30-30 is going to come up about 200 fps less than the JDJ at least. But JD considers the .309 good for at least 300 yards so sure the .30-30 should be good for 200 with that bullet.

From personal experience, I can tell you that both the 150 and 165 grain BTs will open on game down to around 1650 fps or so. They work like a charm at the velocity you will be launching them at.

Can't wait to try them, soon as I get paid for my present project I'm ordering the barrel.
