Which 22 cal air rifle
« on: December 11, 2007, 06:45:32 AM »
Well, I have decided that I "need" an air rifle.  It must be 22 caliber to be legal for hunting in my State.  I am leaning towards one of the Benjamin 392s as modified by Mac 1.  I am basically ignorant about air rifles and have made this decision largely based on what I have read here.  My use of the airgun will be plinking, pest control and small game hunting nothing larger than a cottontail rabbit.  I like the idea of variable power that the pump up rifle provides.  Is this rifle my best option or is there something better out there that meets my needs for about the same money.  Thanks in advance.

the Benjamin 392s is the BEST 22cal pumper you can get. I have hear of them killing ground hogs.

if you are just hunting some game then the pumpers are fine( i shoot about 50 rounds each day) but if you want something for all round hunting of both small and some bigger game(turkeys, coyotes, bobcats) the the PCP in .22 is the way to go. The .22 is the king of airgun hunting cals. and i have used both 177 1000+ guns and .25 and i have always come back to my olded 2200 crosman.

I have the Benjamin 392 from Mac 1.  It is a great gun.  The trigger could use some work though.

LEO;

I would look at www.straightshooters.com. they have alot of information to look at on a bunch of makes.
I have gone the progression of pump, springer, and now I'm up to PCP (Pre-Charged Pneumatic) I would never go back but it took me 28 years to get here.
Right now I have an Air Force Talon SS. The cool things about this PCP is it's made in the USA, you can swap barrels out in 3 min and they come in .177, 22 and there's talk of a 25.
The Draw back on a PCP is the big one time investment.
I would suggest that you picking up and get a feel for the gun. They all seem to have there own feel, the Talon I have is a bit odd to sight but it grows on a person.
Good shooting

Well, I owned the Benjaman 312 and finally wore it slap out.  Then I got the Benjaman 397.  All the pumping got tiresome, and I decided to get the RWS 350M in .22.  WOW - one pump and this thing puts out 23 ft# and is amazingly accurate.  I love it but it is a looonng dude.  I put a sling on it and a good scope and it is a squirrel whacker supreme.  The RWS 460 wasn't available when I got the 350, but from what I've heard, now I think I gotta have a 460 in .22.  Everyone seems to love them and claim they are smooth, easier to cock, and not hold sensitive at all.
