Help on a Model 700 7mm mag
« on: December 29, 2007, 02:18:27 PM »
Hi all,

I am looking for help in identifying two 7 mag's I have. Both are Model 700's circa early to mid 1960's. Both have barrels that appear to be blued but are actually stamped stainless steel. Both shoot lights out, (under .75 inch at 100 yds, best group on one was .825 at 150 yds).. Did remington offer these as standard factory options? I bought one at the Kittery trading post in 2000 for 300 bucks and the other my dad bought from a gentleman in NH for 175 bucks and all of the reloading gear..
We have both killed many critters with them and would like a little more background info on them. Remington was not helpful when we contacted them.
thx

Ive got the same thing. 1962 rem 700 7mag. It was blued when I bought it. Found out the barrel is stainless when I had a muzzlebrake put on it. Mines got a 5 digit SN# 1962 was the first year they made the 700  7mag Mines got a real nice walnut stock with real nice checkering. My best group was a honest 1/2inch outside to outside  I bought mine from a pawnshop for 300. It is the one gun in my safe that will never be sold. Its the first gun i bought cause I wanted it not because it was on sale .   Jay
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting

Somewhere in GBs there's a formula that tells you how to use the serial number of your rifle to determine when it was made.
Some of the early magnums were made with SS barrels because without proper regard to heat build up you could wash a barrel out pretty quick.

Back in the 60's when Remington came out with the 7mm Mag, the barrels were blued stainless.  I think they iron plated them so they would take the bluing.  That was before the time when folks wanted to take bright shiney metal in the game fields.  Now, it is somewhat the rage, so they can eliminate the step of treating the stainless to take bluing.  Other non-glare surface treatments have been developed and are available now too.  Times change - sometimes good, sometimes not.

Thanks Guys..I do like the fact that they are blued..I would own more stainless weapons if this practice was still  in service.
