.243 or .30/30 barrel for 9 yr old son
« on: December 15, 2007, 03:40:03 PM »
last year he used our handi .223 with good results. unfortunately some of the places we hunt they had rather a larger caliber be used. i'm considering the 243 or  30/30. which is better? shots will be under 150yards and i do handload. i figure the 243 with 95-100gr. bullets and the 30/30 with 125gr bullets should have about the same recoil. what cha think?

Hello thelaw,
My personal preference would be to get the 30-30, especially since you reload. A pointed bullet in a single shot 30-30 really makes a big difference in trajectory and retained energy over the more common flat point bullets.

GOOD SHOOTING!

This is a beat to death much discussed topic, please see 243 or 30-30 FOR A YOUTH in the More Handi Info section of the FAQs. ;)

The 30-30.

I had a .243 superlight and I have a 30-30 Handi.
I got the .243 for my nephew to shoot.
He shot the .243 about 15 times and said he didn't like it. The muzzle blast from the short barrel and the perceived recoil turned him off from the gun.
He will shoot my 30-30 all day long and loves every minute of it.
The 30-30 with factory ammo or handloads is very pleasant to shoot and accurate.
Plus it's a 30-30!!

I am with Spanky, I have both and for your needs the 30-30 is by far the better choice....<><....:)

30-30 loaded with 125gr boolits is a good choice. You can use hodgdons youth loads for even less recoil. My son used this combo when he was 9 last year to take his 1st deer at 131 yards.

Can't get any better than that ;D
