How do I know

Hey Quick or anyone else. How can i tell an SB2 frame from another??? I have yet to see a Ser. # start with SB2???
  Local dealer here has a Handi in .243 Hvy. bbl. Has it marked at $204.00. Tag say's NEW. I thought they cost more then that!! Anyway if I buy it I would like to switch bbls which leads back to my original ?.

Ya wanna know for sure, scrawl down the serial number the next time you're in there.  Then call it in to H&R.  They can tell ya.

That's the best advice, you can see pics of frames in the FAQs, and the serial number prefix will tell ya when it was made, see FAQs again, but H&R CS is the best source to see what barrels can be fitted to it.  ;)

Check the FAQs sticky. The two letter serial number prefix tells the year of manufacture if the second letter is N or higher you are OK.

SB1 vs SB2 is only part of the equation if you want to be able to have the factory fit new barrels to the frame.  You will also need to find out if it was manufactured before or after 1987.   If I was to venture a guess I would guess it is SB2 if it is in fact new and all ready has a .243 barrel on it.
But as stated by the other guys the best way to find out for sure is to contact H&R.

Everyone is correct in telling you to write down the complete serial number and check with H&R. Another thing you could look at after you check to see what year the frame/gun was manufactured is to check if the 3 digit number on the barrel lug matches the last 3 numbers of the frame serial number. Not all inclusive, just another bit of info to look at....<><....:)
