Question about a Model seven.
« on: December 10, 2007, 08:08:19 AM »
Hi, I have been considering about getting new rifle, its was a Remington model 7 CDL. I have a Remington model 750 woodsmaster .308 win it is good gun for my to go deer gun in the woods. But when I headed to western WI which is farmland and hilly with wide space oak forest which shot might excess up to 200 yards or a long trip up in rough terrain of boreal forest for deer hunt. I need a light, small, and accurate up to 200 yards. I don't know which is better 7mm-08 or .308 which I already have one in 750. And what best scope for model 7. I need make a plan and make a good decision. I need to hear some of your opinions. Thanks.

I'd not say that either is necessarily better than the other but I do love the 7-08. The Hornady Light Mag loads for it are my absolute all time favorite deer killing load. Still I also have Model 7s in .308 and .260 Remington. I think all of my M7s now wear the Leupold VX or Vari-X III 2.5-8x36 scopes these days. In the past I've used Leupold and Bushnell 2-7s on them and that too is a great fit for the little rifles. My wife's M7 an original in 7-08 wears a Bushnell Elite 4200 1.5-6.

The 7mm/08 might give you a little more range and accuracy.  But the .308 Winchester is a very accurate round with a very good bullet selection.

If all you were going to hunt was whitetail deer, I would say that the .308 is all the more you would need.

If you also wanted to shoot woodchucks and small mammals, the 7mm/08 would be a better all around choice.

Both of them kick about the same amount on that gun platform ( model 7 Remington ).  I have shot several 7mm/08's that were on the edge of brutal, and I hunt with a .300 Winchester Magnum - Browning Pump Rifle, which is a much heavier rifle and absorbs the recoil much better than the Model 7.

As for a scope, I always buy the best that my budget allows.  I stay away from them $100 or less scopes.

Leupold, Bushnell, Nikon are all good manufacturers.

Get the highest power scope you can buy, along with the largest objective.

I have a 5 x 15 x 50 Elite 3200 Bushnell on my .300 Winchester Mag and I have a 5 x 15 x 40 - 3200 Elite on my .270 WSM Browning A bolt Medallion.  Both will shoot the middle out of a 1 inch bulls eye, all day at 200 yards with the right load.

The A Bolt had a Leupold scope on it when I bought it that was only 3 x 9 x 40- ( Vari X I ), and was too dark and too small a magnification for what I use it for.

All the deer I shot this year was with one shot to the neck, they only went 3 feet - straight down!

2.5-8x36mm is a good idea... But I think Leupold 1.75-6x32mm is best for me.. i can use 1.75 for hunting in dense stands of fir tree or 6 for that oak forest of western WI.. I'm going for 7mm-08 Rem because its can go up to 2,800 fps with 140 grain which is plenty power for whitetail. Thanks for your opinions. ;D

You already have a .308 so you really don't need another one of those right now.  Picking a 7mm-08, which I consider a performance twin to the .308 is an ok choice too, and is probably a good start on a future gun collection.  You won't go wrong with either one of those.

If it was me, I'd be seriously looking at a 18" short and mighty Remington Pump Carbine in .30-06.  But that is a long action.

You've made an excellent choice in the model 7 and the 7-08. The 2x7 (or the modern version 2.5x8) will match its fine, under stated lines to perfection. Creating a piece that is highly effective and pleasing to the eye. You will find, however, that with a bit of practice, 200 yards may be your personally decided limit, the rifle is capable beyond that.
Unfortunately, it may be the last rifle you will ever need to buy.  ;D

I've got a Seven in 7/08.  The old model with 18.5 inch barrel.  Great rifle, great caliber.  If I was a one gun type person I'd be forever happy with it.  Just a wonderful little rifle and sorely under appreciated caliber.  Matter of fact, I'm looking for a Model Seven action right now to build a .250 Savage on.

I gotta Model 7 in .308 with a 3x9 burris scope..I think it's a little too much scope though. I prefer to carry my other gun for all action out to 200 yds...It's a 7600 pump carbine in 30.06 with a 1.75 x 6 leupold vari x III scope..

The only reason in your situation to go with a 7/08 would be to start a new collection and have an excuse to buy some more reloading equipment.  The .308 will do everything that the 7/08 will do for all practical purposes..Especially loaded with 150grn bullets :)
