.500 Nitro 3¼
« on: December 19, 2007, 11:58:34 AM »
Well I found out how to post a photo ,so here goes .This is my 500 Nitro 3 1/4, I have shot full loads in this which are a little heavy in the recoil department ,so now use 50/140 & Nitro for Black loads ,still very powerfull ! I have been useing it on a New England NG frame but after reading some treads here might put it on my 270 H&R HN frame do you guys recommend this ? I just liked the sound of New England over Harrington Richards, sounds more Nitro,e

Welcome Boss! That would be a wise choice, I won't shoot any high pressure barrels on my older frames, one of those is an RMEF 35 Whelen, shooting top loads in it may not cause catastrophic failure, but I'd hate to ruin a good frame that works fine with lower pressure loadings. That frame could fail anytime with the wrong loads used on it, they didn't use the same heat treatment that are used on post '99 frames.

Depending on how hot you're loading it,  the .500 Nitro 3" is good for 2100fps with 500gr bullets. I don't even know if I'd use it on a late frame, I've tested a .300 Winchester Short Magnum barrel on a late frame and it didn't do well, it didn't fail, but the case head thrust was too much for the action, each shot would open a temporary gap between the barrel and standing breech.
