Another 45-70 question
« on: December 19, 2007, 05:33:28 PM »
I just saw an older H&R Shikari in 45-70 on one of the auction sites. Is it safe to fire the higher pressure ammo. (Marlin, Ruger levels) in these old guns or are they limited to trapdoor level ammo??

Unfortunately no, the frames are ductile iron, trapdoor loads are the limit, but they're excellent cast bullet shooters, they had very deep rifling in them compared to any of the post '86 barrels. They were made in 44mag also.
