Rem 721 case sticks
« on: January 26, 2008, 06:27:29 AM »
Have a friends 721 in 270 and the cases will not extract on the first couple rounds after cleaning.  The extractor will remove a small portion off of the case rim and we have to knock the case out though the bore with a brass rod.  I have considered replacing the extractor but from the markings on the case it appears to be doing its job.  The brass is full length re-sized and the charge is middle of the road, not hot.  The brass shows a rough surface from the camber after we get it out and I know the camber was thoroughly cleaned prior to shooting.  Any ideas on what to try next?

Your statement of the first couple rounds could lead to a little oil being left in the chamber and maybe a dirty chamber, I would look into that if it working fine after a few rounds.   JIM

Sounds like rough chamber surface.  You can use some 0000 steel wool on a Fordum and polish the chamber a little and see if that helps, it should.  If the ammo were giving high chamber pressure the empties would get progressively harder to extract but that is not the case of this rifle.  Has this chamber always done this since new or is this something that has recently developed.  Has the barrel been rechambered from a different cartridge such as recut to Ackly Improved?  If so, maybe the chamber cutter left some machining chatter or roughness on the walls.  Good luck, hope you can get this worked out without rebarreling the rifle.  BTW, if the barrel is in good shape you can always have a smith set the barrel back and recut the chamber, this would be a lot less expensive than a new barrel.

The history of the rifle is not clear.  This is the second or third owner.  I'll try the 0000 steel wool and see if it reduces the camber roughness.  The idea of taking the barrel in one thread rotation will be a good back up plan.  Thanks!
