Why Fish Oil is Good for You

It's good news that we are living longer, but bad news that the longer we live, the better our odds of developing late-onset Alzheimer's disease.

Many Alzheimer's researchers have long touted fish oil, by pill or diet, as an accessible and inexpensive "weapon" that may delay or prevent this debilitating disease. Now, UCLA scientists have confirmed that fish oil is indeed a deterrent against Alzheimer's, and they have identified the reasons why.

Reporting in the current issue of the Journal of Neuroscience, now online, Greg Cole, professor of medicine and neurology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and associate director of UCLA's Alzheimer Disease Research Center, and his colleagues report that the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) found in fish oil increases the production of LR11, a protein that is found at reduced levels in Alzheimer's patients and which is known to destroy the protein that forms the "plaques" associated with the disease.

I think more people in our country could do with some brain food.  Omega 3 fatty acids have shown to be instrumental in brain activity and reduces chances of Alzheimer's disease.  At what point is Alzheimer's disease detectable or in its early stages does it affect thinking?  Only during Presidential election years?  LOL  However, fish products high in Omega 3 fatty acids are truly good for the circulation system and lowers bad cholesterol also.  Fish like tuna have very low quantities of Omega 3 fatty acids.  Shrimp and salmon are exceptionally high in Omega 3.  Yet most people prefer tuna over salmon, probably because of the marketing in the 50's by Charlie Tuna.

Per my doctors instructions, I have been taking 3000mg of the fish oil gel capsules daily for over one year. According to the before and after blood tests, it has significantly reduced the cholesterol and triglyceride counts. I am a believer.

Me too.  I've had Multiple Sclerosis for over 30 years now.  With MS it is obvious that getting enough exercise is simply not an option.  I smoke, drink to excess on frequent occasions, 25 #'s overweight, and family history of heart conditions.  Yet, I've been a salmon fishermen with my wife and crew for much of my adult life and have used salmon instead of tuna in every recipe.  I eat salmon spread on crackers for lunch at least 2-3 times a week for years.  At my last check up, my blood pressure was 120/65 and a cholesterol count was 130 HDL and my LDL was 100 for a total 230 count.  Doc says it is high, but with my HDL 3 times higher than normal people, it offsets the high count.   The high HDL count attributed to large Omega 3 food intake, is what the Doc attributes to my excellent blood pressure.   Nothing else even comes close to explaining why it is so low.  It certainly isn't due to exercise.

I am glad to hear it has helped you also. the doc does not want to prescibe meds if there is an alternative. The improvement in my numbers is not from a good diet. The one year experiment, verified by blood tests per the doc has me sold.
