NEF Sidekick...Question Two...Scope Mount?
« on: March 05, 2007, 03:23:19 PM »
Hey Guys,

My research says the Sidekick is a fairly accurate rifle.  What scope mount/rings set up would you recommend??

Make sure that you get the base from H&R. There are others that claim to fit but lack the rear slot to make the scope mount far enough to the rear. I also prefer Warne quick disconnect rings. Depending on what stock you have you may have to upgrade to one with sufficient cheek rise to match up with a scoped rifle. I put the synthetic stock with high comb and a synthetic forearm on my Huntsman. I also bought one of the bases that do not work first before learning about the rear mounting slot, then I bought the one from H&R. As a side note I also bought the Hubbardoutdoors replacement ramrod which is a big improvement from the stock one.

The Weaver base is junk.  You can't set the scope back far enough.  The factory base is expensive because it comes with the hammer extension.  I have a Leopold base.  Paid about $8 from Midway.   Here's the link http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=916060  They also have some info in a FAQ sticky thread the the NEF H&R rifle forum.

I agree on the base just get the one from the factory so you have enough slots to positon the scope. As far as rings go, mine are weaver style rings, low type fits fine on my Sidekick. I really enjoy shooting that gun!

I also like the Warne quick release mounts. They might cost a little more but it sure is handy to be able to remove the scope when cleaning the gun.

I don't understand how the quick release rings-mounts work as far as taking it off the gun? Doesn't that change the POI the same way taking my scope off the gun would work?

Yes it will be Leupold says it will be within a half inch of point of impact. (their rings) I haven't tried them as far as taking the scope off but I have the ones in the link on my 209x45. They do work well if you have a scope failure and still have open sites.

Originally I had a  3x9 40m Banner scope on my NEF, but found that it was too much scope for the conditions I hunted in.  Here in Virginia the brush can be nasty, so your shots are limited to under 100 or even 75 yards in most cases.  I ended up going to a Tasco Bantam 2.5x scope.  It is perfect for these conditions.  I used a Weaver base and Weaver 4x4 rings.  I did however go with the offset 4x4 rings and it gave me a better eye relief:

This setup is very comfortable and very effective in my hunting area.  I shoot a 300grain XTP sabot with 85 grs of black powder.  So far it has taken deer every season for the last four years.  Funny part is my buddy uses the gun, because he doesn't have a BP gun.  I think he is just too lazy and cheap to go out and buy one for himself.  Did I forget to say that I hunt on his property?    ;)
Just another voice in the crowd!!!
