« on: October 08, 2004, 05:57:59 PM »
Hey there guys ever heard of the .338 EXCALIBER!!! This cartridge pushes a 200 grain nosler b-tip 3600 fps/5755 ft-lb. at  muzzle, and at 400 yards still has 2715 fps/3274 ft.-lb. and drops 6.7 inches. Wheww!!! But also has a painful recoil. Anybody else know about this cartridge?

Sounds pretty beefy...I mean powerful...I mean VICIOUS!!!  Any way you look at it, I think I would like to know myself whether it exists, and were to find one; it sounds like a pretty strange cartridge... UPDATE:  It is called the 340 Excalibur.  I just checked out a search on the web, and found out it is a wildcat  duh...  Anyway, it is based on the 378 Weatherby case, but necked down to 338, and yet gets more velocity than the 338-378 Wby.  Wonder how they accomplished that?  Can see the main specs at: www.viersco.com

I don't see any further info, except they are offered only in custom made rifle, which I fully deduced from the start.  But if anybody finds out more, please post it here.

I have a 338 excaliber from A-square.  I ordered with a 28inch barrel.  Accuracy is very good with the 200gr Ballistic tips.  Didn't do as well with A-square triad of bullets.

The A square coil check stock helps the recoil significantly.  The recoil pad actually does absorb shock compared to the solid rubber models.  The width of the recoil pad is almost 2x typicaly pads which helps spread the recoil over a larger area.

The gun is not light especially with the 3-12x56 Zeiss I have mounted.  The weight helps lower the percieved recoil as well.

I plan to load some swift A-frames, but haven't got around to load em yet.

I had the gun on consignment for a year but no one made an offer.  I'll probably have the gun re-barrelled for 416rigby sometime in the future.

Hey there oxcartdriver, how are you? What type of hunting do you do with the rifle? The ballistics of this cartridge are great, and also what would one expect to pay for a rifle of this caliber? Thanks.

Sorry for the delayed response.

As for what a 338 excaliber costs, I don't know.  I try to forget the monetary details on such purchases.

I had listed mine with the 3-12x56 Zeiss Illuminated reticle&mounts for something like 1900 including the dies.  It didn't sell as several people were interested, but concerned with the availability of ammunition.

I had planned to hunt elk.  Yes packing this rifle up and down at 10k to 11k elevation is a work out.  I live and work out (rugby/bike/run) at 7,500 ft so its not to bad for me.  Additionally, I had hunted antelope with the 200gr ballistic tips in Colorado.  Recently I've been using a 270wea (ruger #1) on antelope with awesome results, and a 338win (win mod 70) on elk.  Hence the rifle is presently just sitting.

Its a long range tool for sure.  I wouldn't carry this firearm in the thick woods of Maine or any other local where visibility prevents swinging the big stick.

The action is long enough for the 416 rigby, and a shorter barrel and smaller scope would lighten the load for some closer range work.
