ejector to extractor?
« on: December 23, 2007, 10:22:38 AM »
Anybody know if it's possible to change the older ejector to the newer positive extractor? It sure would be nice to be able to shoot my Hornet barrel without having to carry a cleaning rod to knock the empties out.

Thanks Joe!! :D There is a conversion to extractor, but it's not positive like the current production extractors, just a spring driven extractor. Best advice is in the FAQs, polish the chamber and tune the ejector a little to provide more pressure on the ejector claw, 99.9% of all stuck brass is barely stuck, those that I've had from too hot of load come out easy, I've even had some pop out while I was retrieving a rod from behind the shooting line! :o :D

If it's really sticking bad after you've tried all the fixes, you may be loaded too hot, or have a defect in the chamber. If it's a factory fitted barrel, H&R will fix the chamber or replace the barrel with an extractor barrel.

Thanks quickdtoo, I didn't think I could switch to positive extraction but it's worth a try! I'm going to polish the chamber and see if that helps it. I'm glad they've fixed my only real beef with their rifles, the rest of it does work quite well.

I have a working plan for converting a current production extractor to an ejector, parts cost about $30 for ejector conversion, but whether it would be practical, I don't know yet, depends a lot on whether H&R will sell the extractor parts for the other way around, all that would need to be done is the slot in the underlug cut a little longer to the front and a couple holes drilled for the roll pins. I think the slot can be cut with a 2" cutoff wheel which I'm gonna attempt as soon as I figure out a contraption to hold the tool square to the barrel, thinking on mounting the cutoff tool stationary and using the barrel as a lever to pivot down on the cutoff wheel sort of like a chop saw in reverse. :D

Have a Merry Christmas, ;)

EDIT: I just checked the online H&R Handi owner's manual, they list the part numbers for the extractor parts which are available to us!! So maybe that will be my next project, ejector to factory extractor conversion.
