Range report 357mag SB1
« on: January 10, 2009, 03:50:23 PM »
This is a sighting in and range report.  I first put a burris 3-9x40 on her just to get to shoot her, didn't get a chance to group it only sighted in.  Changed the scope to 4x32 weaver shooting the hornady LE's seems to be in the 2" range at 100yds.  Probably as good as I can do with the 4 power.  Quick had said he didn't get good accuracy with the LE's.  I don't know what his accuracy was with them.  This one seems to shoot them well enough to take down a LA whitetail.

Can't wait to get a good handload developed for her!

It was pretty bad at 100yds with a 2x scope, I think I'd want a bigger bullet than the 140gr FTP at that range tho, it has just 1000lbs energy at the muzzle, should work for closer work tho.

 Yeah guys ,

Bought some of those just the other week , didnt get to shoot any out of my old SB2 as i sold it to Fortress .. But did get some down range out the other halves 94 AE Winnie and they didnt do bad , But i'm in the line of thinking with Tim ..
A good flat faced hard cast of one sort or the other should be better suited for the longer distances ..

Bobby do you reload at all ?  If so I had some awesome accuracy out of a 140gr bullet over a charge of IMR 4227 .. That would cover light and fast , it was cooking out at close to 2000 fps

Default & Tim,

Yes I do reload...........just not for the 357 yet.  Waiting on stuff to come in.  I'm in agreement that a heavier bullet would probably do better on deer, just thought I would try the LEs while I'm waiting.  Hopefully I will not have a shot out at 100yds, most of the deer killed here between 50-75 yds, maybe closer.

All 3 of mine shoot very well with 158SP's and a heavy dose of LilGun.  My 14 year old son and I both got Turkeys with one this fall.  DP

Bobby

I found that my 357 barrel does much better with the 158 and up bullet weights , with the cast 180s doing the best over a strong dose of 2400 powder .
