CZ 527 7.62X39 load data???
« on: October 07, 2007, 02:43:34 PM »
I just bought a little CZ carbine in this cal....I am wondering which powder and bullets people are using for hunting small deer sized game...Can you use .308 bullets or do you have to use .310,.311,or.312 dia.?....
Also I have seen some where 3 shot flush mounted clips/mags for these little 527's but can't find that info now...Does anyone know were they can be bought...
Thanks,
Mic

Nrut, a guy in Oregon mills down the bottom metal so it is flush with the stock, then shortens the mags so they protrude by only a very small bit, but he does not do it to Hornets nor 7.62X39's, due to the amount of plastic in the magazines. He does with the other calibers, though.

NRUT,

I have had one for a couple of years, but have not taken a deer with it yet.  They are supposed to be .308 bore, and mine shoots .308 dia. bullets extremely well.  My hunting load is the Federal 123 grain soft point.  It shoots Wolf HP's better than I ever imagined.  The Bear soft points also shoot well.  Handloads with Hornady and Speer 100 grain half-jackets, various cast bullets all shoot very well.

My dislikes are the protruding magazine which interferes with carrying, and it does not load single shots (you have to use the magazine).

If I had to have only one rifle for all my hunting: deer, varmints, small game, this would be the one!

NRUT, I stand corrected. Roy Bertalotto does indeed do the conversions on the 7.62. E_mail is rvb100@comcast.net. I have a 527 in .223 that will be converted in a couple of weeks. He is not in Oregon, in MA.
He does nice work.

Contrary to what one misguided American Rifleman says the CZ527's don't use a .308 bore. My carbine slugs out to be .300 between the lands and .3105 in the grooves. I've found a combination of AA-1680 and either 125grn .308 nosler B-tips or 123grn .310 V-maxes to be THE load for these little carbines.

I don't know what everyone has against the protruding mag on these rifles. I like them, it's what separates these rifles from all the remchesters out there.

It's been pretty hotly contested as to how much diffrence there is between loading 7.62x39 using .308 bullets vs .310-.311 so here it is. I tested this today and here are the results.

The rifle is a CZ527 carbine topped with a 3x9x40 redfield accutrac scope. The bore measures .300 land to land and .3105 in the grooves

The ammo was loaded with 150 gr Sierre soft points 10 rds of .308 and 10 rds of the same bullet sized .311. Cases were Remington CCI 400 , The powder was 23.5grs of Re-7 with a COL of 2.310

It was about 65 degrees today with a light varible breeze of 15 mph

All velocities were taken at 25 feet.

As you can see there is very little diffrence in group size. About the only real measurable diffrence in using the .308 dia bullets is that they are somewhat slower in the FPS department.

Of course your mileage may vary.

Thanks to all for your replies...
GatCat ...unfortunately since I live in B.C. Canada I won't be able to ship my rifle to the States with out great expense and paper work for the mag. shorting...

woodchkhtr...what is your favorite powder with cast and what mold are you using? I cast also and will be trying some when I get a larger sizer...The biggest sizer I have now is a .311...what size sizer do you have the best luck with?

krochus....Thanks for the info on the tests that you did on shooting different sized bullets...I am glad to hear that you can use .308 bullets with out loss of accuracy as I have lots of bullets that size...I would like the flush mag. because the rifle won't balance when carrying it ahead of the mag. .... When I find a favorite load I plan on using this rifle with out a scope...I will only use a scope for load testing..

Thanks again for your replies,
Mic

My son and I both use CZ527 7.62x39's for hunting deer (Red, Fallow and Whitetail) here in New Zealand, our standard load is the Speer  .308dia 130gr Hollow Point using 26gr of ADI 2207 which I'm not sure if this is available in the USA, Federal  primers, they chronograph at just under 2300fps and group around an inch in both rifles at 100yds.(Rifles have been epoxy bedded and barrels floated) We have had 100% success rate with this cartridge and load, the largest animal so far being a Red stag weighing in at just over 200lb dressed and the longest shot 180yds by the young fellow on a Whitetail spiker on Stewart Island. We're sold on these little rifles. We both use Reflex suppressors on them which again I'm not sure if these are legal in the USA.
Feel free to contact me if you need any more load info.
