Hey guys. I am thinking of getting a Marlin 1895 45-70 with a 22'' barrel for hog hunting. I foud one on the net for $505.00 is that a good deal ? To the people that own them do you like it ? Have any of you ever shot it for groups ? I was wondering how it groups and the over all quality of this gun. My first rifle was a 30-30 Marlin with a 3x9 Bushnell scope on top. I loved that gun and was happy with it till it got stolen 20 years ago. >:(  If you would just give me your thoughts on this gun. Thanks.  ;D ;D ;D

If it is used the price is to high, I have a Stainless Steel 45-70 Guide gun and I love it. You can't go wrong with the 45-70, but look around for a better deal.

I recently sold a used one for $250.00 if that helps. (Marlin 1895 straight stock)
I sold it to my brother though. might have gotten a little more
selling to someone else, but he wanted it pretty bad.
They are quite accurate and I do not think I have ever
encountered a hog that went very far after being hit by
one of those large diameter bullets. I use a H&R Shikari in .45-70
and it works great.

I guess if you just want a 4570 it will work, but I killem with a 3030, 357mag rifle and a AR15 shootin a 52 grain match hollow point. Hogs are not that hard to kill. I have killed them with a 4570 but it was just for fun, as that much power is not needed, even for the ones going around 350 to 400 lbs, or bigger, which we have around here. A lot a younguns too.

The main reason I use it is that my rounds are loaded with Black powder.
It just kind of adds a little to the Hunt using that old Shikari with
Smoke Belching cartridges.

For what its worth 45/70 is the way to go. I also have the Guide Gun in Stainless with a Scout Scope Leupold 2x it is an unbelievable and stacks up a group. I like it so much I just bought a 1895 Marlin 26" Octagon  Barrel  Cowboy version,.. its the Big Daddy. You talking about a Shooter,. it is impressive.  As an over all contributing comment ,.. It is about shot placement,. I just like Big Bore Guns. It's kind-a like a Harley-Davidson,.... there is a certain sound and a feeling that comes from it you don't hear or get any where else.   :) 45/70 Marlin Rifles   ROCK!!!

Dale, I have one and it is a great rifle and has proved to be very accurate and dependable for me, I'm just disappointed that I won't be able to hunt with it when I move to Indiana in a couple months.   I don't think you can go wrong with a 45-70 Marlin for bears or hogs, even if it's not needed it's a hell of a lot of fun to shoot and hunt with.  Good luck and hope you find what you're looking for.

i think thats about a 100 bucks to much for a used one and even to mcuh for a new one. Buds gunshop had blued guide guns on sale a while  back new for 429. Should be no problem if you look around to find a blued one for 450 new and a staniless one for about 50 bucks more. I just picked up a used but like new 26 inch cowboy for 475 shipped so deals are there if your patient.

Dee makes a good point about the power of the .45-70.  I have used .45-55 equivalent loads in my Ruger Number 3 for hogs and have been impressed at the penetration of a cast bullet going around 950 f/s.  If you hunt with dogs, then there is the risk of overpenetration and injuring a dog.

On my first time out with my 1895 guide gun I shot two large wild pigs with one shot using the 460 gr hammer head bullet at approx. 1550 fps and using the open factory sights.  Yes, one was behind the other and the second one was hit right in the shoulder.  Broke a lot of bone.

I just noticed that Browning is making a lever action rifle (BLR) in 450 Marlin. Now that would be a nice medium range hammer.

I bought a stainless guide gun and put a Leupold scout scope on it and have been working on some handloads
it's a REALLY fun gun

what I have found is that heavy bullets (405) at 1300 or so FPS is a lot easier shooting than a 300g or so bullet at higher velocities
very fun gun
mine is setup just for hogs
do I need a 45/70?
no
but it sure is fun with those big chunks of lead :)
