Boresnake

I have been using a standard rod and patch with an occational brush, muzzle first, for years in my Remington 7400. I bought a Boresnake for that gun, as well as for a lever action and an AR-10 and AR-15. They seem too easy to work effectively. Does anyone here use them exclusively? What is the best way to use them with solvent and oil? Solvent in front of the brush, behind, dip the whole snake in solvent, etc.? How often do you wash your Boresnakes? Should I have 2 snakes for each caliber, one for solvent runs and one for oil runs? I think I would clean my guns more often if I were just using the Boresnake.

In my experience, the Boresnake is great for quick cleaning, and does a pretty good job, especially on lever actions and auto loaders. However, if severly fouled, I'd still use a rod. I usually soak the front and brush area with solvent, run it through several times, then light oil the end and pull it through. I wash it when it looks dirty. Anything that will help you do that pain in the neck cleaning more often is a good thing. I just think that a rod works better for bolt guns and heavily fouled bores. That's just what I've experienced.

I take a bore snake with me on hunting trips for a quick clean, I don't even use solvent, just run the rope through a couple of times if I use the gun and then a thorough cleaning when I get home.
