Hornady 300 Gr. Short Jacket Bullets for .45-70
« on: December 27, 2007, 12:17:14 PM »
Does anybody know if these are available?  They look like a good bullet for low-velocity work, with no leading problems, and plenty of soft lead exposed.  I just started using a .45-70 Handi rifle, and would like to try this bullet. I like the 100 gr. .30 caliber SJ's, and have used them in .30 Carbine, .30-30 & .30-06.

My 1967 "Hornady Handbook of Cartridge Reloading" shows it with loads up to 1700 fps.  My 1980 3rd Edition doesn't show it anymore.  They must have dropped it somewheres in between those years.  Too bad, with the increased interest in the cartridge, Hornady is losing a good opportunity since it would make a good choice for plinking and light game such as deer.

Perhaps someone has a supply stashed.  How should I go about trying to find them?

Thanks for the info Tim.  I'll check into it.  Some of those bullets might do the job at less than jacketed prices.  There is somebody around here that is supposed to be casting, but I haven't been able to find them.  Of course, I just might get a mold and sizer and cast my own.

The Remington 300 grain JHP is the least expensive jacked bullet available, check Graff  or Midway.  The Laser Cast 300 grain FP is also a good bullet for reduced loads and I shoot some of those but the Remington JHP is not much more costly, is more accurate and can be loaded as hot as you like.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

Ditto on the Remington 300 grain JHP bullets. I load mine from 1900 to 2100 fps in my Handi with excellent results.
