Range report on Encore 6.5X284Win.
« on: December 27, 2007, 10:10:03 AM »
First time out with this one. Encore with a 16" MGM 6.5X284Win. Wrapped in wood from Otter Custom Stocks. All the loads shot today were starting loads well under max. Groups were shot at 80yds. Recoil from this pistol not bad at all with these loads.

1st loads were 95gr. VMax over 51. to 52. gr H4350. Accuracy was good but I think these bullets are a little light for this round.

2nd loads were Horn. 129gr SST over 43. to 45.gr H4350. Accuracy was 3/4" to 1". The 129gr SST are what I like to use on deer in the 6.5.

3rd loads were Nos.140gr. HPBT over 42. to 43.5gr. H4350. Some groups were under 1/2".

All the loads were starting loads and as I go up some more I think the groups will tighten up some more. Getting use to this grip and keeping a consistent grip will help also.

The 6.5-284 shoots really well in a pistol length barrel doesn't it Dave ?

I've had a 1 in 8 twist 15" Fox Ridge bull (.995 o.d.) Encore barrel, with no brake or porting, since May of this year that shoots extremely well with the below load.....my best 100 yd. four round group thus far has been .628.

Fireformed Winch. .284 brass...CCI BR-2 primers...Hornady 129gr #2620...50.7grs H4831SC.

IKE

I really think it is going to get a lot better. Those groups were actually fireforming the 284Win. brass with starting loads. I do believe now that i have formed brass and start bumping the loads up accuracy is going to get a lot better. And that was the first time shooting with that style grip so being consistant was a bit of a problem. So far recoil is very managible.

Just goes to show that when you start with a great barrel, and that one is a beaut, and great furniture you already are most of the way there.  That is one nice looking pistol !

MGM, Has my vote, got my first and it won't be my last. You only get what you pay for. But that doesn't hold true with all barrels, I have factory barrels that are good shooter. Dave fine looking pistol  but all of yours are great looking. Lou
