Weird wear area on 870, advise needed.
« on: December 14, 2007, 06:46:17 AM »
I noticed that a wear area is forming on my 870 Express' receiver. It is on the underside of the top of the receiver about dead smack in the middle both side to side and front to back. I believe it is being caused by what Remington calls the "lock block assembly" or as I have always heard it called, the bolt, when the bolt travels backwards. There is a long rub mark (not deep or sharp) that ends in a rounded 'lump' where a small amount of metal is being displaced. The 'lump' and resulting depression is very small, maybe 1/8" x 1/8" and 1/16" deep at most. Obviously the reciever is being smacked by the bolt at it's most rearward travel. Short of smoking parts of the top of the bolt and trying to figure out what is making the contact I'll just have to say it's somewhere on top of the bolt. This could be a normal occurance with Rem shotguns, I really don't know. It however does not look normal. As this is my first experience with an 870 (mostly have shot/used Moss 500's) is this a normal occurance after 250-300 shots (mostly 2/12" and a few 3" shells)? I'd rather not tie up my favorite shotgun at a gunsmith for weeks on end if this is a non issue.

Why not call Remington Customer Service and ask them?  You might even be able to e-mail digital pics of the problem area(s) and arrange for repairs, etc.  What you are experiencing does sound out of the normal, and my 1950's - 60's era 870 Wingmaster doesn't have any suggestion of what you are describing.  I would give them a call.

I have had to have similar discussions with Winchester about the ejectors scratching cases and depositing shards of brass in the receiver.  Yes, it took shipping the firearm back to the Service department to have the adjustment/repair done via warranty, but I have been happier with both of my Model 70's since then.  It was worth the trouble and cost of freight.

I refuse to have a battle of wits with an unarmed person.

It sounds like something does not fit right and should be adjusted.

A good gunsmith could take care of the problem for you.

A call to Remington wouldn't hurt.

Actually I ended up taking it to not one but two gunsmiths, one of which I consider to be a 'true' gunsmith and not a 'hack' or a simple parts replacer. This man can actually FIX or ADJUST firearms. Both said that it is very common and nothing to worry about. They both said virtually ALL 870's will do this at some point or another. The small 'dent' never gets any bigger and does not compromise the integrity of the receiver. They both said to go shoot it.
