Cryogenics and a Handi barrel
« on: January 01, 2008, 04:22:36 AM »
Has anyone tried the cryogenic process on their Handi barrels? From their website, 300Below makes it sound like it may be a worthwhile investment.

That place is just down the road from my girlfriend's house in Decatur and I was thinking about dropping off a couple of barrels and trying it.  I actually have duplicate new 7mm-08 and 22-250 barrels and was thinking about doing one in each caliber and then not doing one and seeing if there is a difference.

Anyone have an opinion on this process or experience with it?

Back in the day when I was a research/design engineer we did quite a lot of work on cryogenics, and 300 Below are really, really good people to work with. We found the most improvement in strength/ductility/microstructure when dealing with certain alloy and tool steels in the 45-50 RC range. Well above what a bbl would be.
That said, it can't hurt to try. Never saw cryogenic treatment do any harm. Just depends on whether or not you want to spend the $ to find out.

In the past I have talked to engineers at two different companies that dealt with cryogenics both said that our gun barrels would see very little if any benefits from it.

A few days ago I was talking with the fellows at Benchmark Barrels. They don't use the cryo system.
