First Handgun Kill
« on: December 30, 2007, 04:35:16 PM »
Connected tonight.  Hunting a blind with a buddy.  He had a shotgun and I had my Ruger GP 100 357 open sights.  Deer started making her way close range so I handed the camera to him and took aim.  Shot her at 28 yards slightly quarter toward me.  Put it though her shoulder, took out her heart and exited other side.  First kill on video as well.  What a great hunt.  Shot a 140" P&Y but didn't compare to my first 357 kill.

Great job! Sounds like it was a hoot! Awsome too that you got it on video. I've tried, but it's dang near impossible to hold the camera, and shoot too! ;D

I hate to say this but I don't know what load i was using :o  I had six rounds left over from when I bought them 2 years ago now I have 5 left!  Maybe 5 deer?

What is the effective kill range for my Ruger 6" barrel and what different factory loads would you recommend?

50-60 yards, but this depends on you and how well you shoot. Any of the popular 158 gr. soft points on the market. With that said the deer in my avatar was shot with 125gr. soft point Remington umc ammo. I have been testing this ammo for a few years now with good results. But I have killed alot of deer with the .357 with all weights. I do not recommend the lighter bullets to first time .357 shooters or first time hand gunners you must pick your shots more carefully. I do strongly recommend 158 soft points. These will work from all the good chest shot angles.

Congratulations:
One of my men tells the story of receiving a military evaluation from an old Sgt. Major.  It simply said "You done good".
It wasn't very eloquent, but it got the point across.
You will remember this deer like you remember shooting your 'First Deer'.

Ditto on the congrats. In hunting, I always feel the means are more important than the end (ie. my first bow doe was more of a trophy than any buck I have killed) so I share your enthusiasm about the means with which the deer was taken. And I can't wait to take one with my GP 100 too....

You are right it will always be memorable.  I was more excited than with my 139 P&Y this year.  I brought along the video camera and handed it to my buddy when the deer was coming in close so we got it on video.  When i shot my buddy forgot he was videoing so he dropped the camera to watch the deer run then brought the camera up and could not find the deer.  We were laughing so hard.  He then put the camera on me so I could talk about the shot.  When i watched the tape he had it zoomed all the way in so all he got was one of my eyes...poorly focused at that.  It was a hoot.  Happy New Year.

Congratulations!  And in front of a witness is even better!!  As for range, I shot an 8 point a few years back at 85 yds with a 6" S&W open sight.  I was using 140 gr Silvertip HP's and I hit right behind the shoulder.  The HP blew up in the lungs and they were like jello.  The buck ran about 80 yds and collapsed.  That bullet worked perfectly where it hit but it might have been another story had I hit the shoulder at that range.  I don't think Winchester even makes that load anymore.  Again congratulations.  44 Man

Congratulations 22lyons, I know exactly what you mean about the excitement of your first deer with a handgun, it's really cool that you got it on video.
GOOD SHOOTING!
