r fmj bullets ok?
« on: January 06, 2008, 05:49:18 AM »
G'mornin guys. I'm headed down to around fowlerton area in Feb. w/ a group of friends to try for some pork for the freezers.  One of the guys wants to take one of his old military surplus rifles but the only ammo he can get for it is full metal jacket. This ammo is illegal to hunt with in Wisconsin, but we have ALOT of stupid laws here. Is there any law against using FMJ ammo to hunt hogs in Texas? He assures me that this is the rifle that he shoots the best and will be keeping shots under 100yds. Thanks . :)

To my knowledge there is very little re: shooting feral hogs in Texas that is illegal.   However in my opinion FMJ is a poor choice for any hunting situation.  Not sure what caliber military rifle your friend could possibly have that he can not find a decent SP round for, but I'm sure there are plenty of calibers I am not familiar with...

There is no law that I know of. They just don't expand on impact. Some people clip the tip off with strong wire snips to make hollow points but I've never tried that.

:) Thanks.  i agree that FMJ bullets are a poor choice for hunting; but if that's all he's got and this trip sparks a little more interest in hunting for him- then I'm all for it.

He will only end up with lost hogs. There would be no shock from the bullet and little initial blood loss to leave a trail. Also, fmj bullets tend to ricochet very bad. Cutting the tips off may risk having the jacket peel away or the bullet come apart before impact and probably creates and inaccurate round. Bad idea all the way around. The only sure way would be if the rifle was very accurate with the round and he could make only head or ear shots. He might want to dig a little further for the soft point ammo.  Check with www.midwayusa.com . You did not say what caliber, but most of the military calibers are made in a hunting round by at least one manufacturer these days. Just have to mail order in advance.
Good luck on the hunt.
