Savage 30-series b
« on: February 09, 2008, 06:00:12 PM »
Hi everyone, never posted before but I have read alot on this site. I mostly watch rimfire and levergun but have a question for shotguns today. I went to a gun show today looking for 17's and levers and came home with a Savage pump 30-series b, serial a9618xx for 125$. This gun looks to be in good shape with not much use. I have a 12 ga 870 wingmaster and thought this might be a good 20 ga to go along with the wingmaster for some recoil-sensitive relatives. I got looking on the internet and see very little to nothing about this gun- did I buy a strange orphan? I like the looks of the gun, has some engraving of pheasants on the reciever and checkering. There is one wee little problem with it-it won't fire, one of the extractors is bent over and in. The dealer says he will fix it or trade for something or refund the 125$. trade prospects for me would be a couple of 190 winchester 22's or a marlin bolt 12 ga-never seen that one either. I think I would just as soon have him fix the savage. What do you guys think?

The Savage 30 pump is, unfortunately, long discontinued, and a great gun. I think it's demise was due to the popularity of the Remington 870. If the gun is in as good of shape as you say it is, I personally would get it fixed and keep it. It's rare enough in 12 gauge, let alone 20 gauge, and would probably make an excellent bird gun.

Here are the specs for the model 30 from the 1971 Savage catalog, enjoy a little history.

Thanks for the great info- I learned more about this gun in the last 10 minutes than I did last night on the net searching. I did take it back today and he will fix it, I do really like the looks of it. It looks just like the upper one in your ad pictures- looks good next to my wingmaster. I have a box of 20ga shells I am looking forward to shooting when I get it back in a week or two. I will post back results-hope to chase a few rabbits with it. Thanks.                                                                                                                                                                                                        Also- when I go to pick it up, he has a 12ga marlin 50 bolt in fair to good shape for 100 bucks. Would that be a fair deal, I don't need it but I didn't need that savage either.
