Stock replacement on A Bolt
« on: January 18, 2008, 12:27:44 PM »
Hey guys...

I have been reading the forum for a while and have just joined so I can ask questions...If I order a replacement stock (probably from here... http://www.gun-parts.com/browningstocks/...) and get it pre-finished, is it something that I can just essentially "screw on" and go or are there other things I have to do to make it work? I really like the "pepper" stocks and think it would look good on my Stainless Stalker but am concerned about the work involved to do it right. I have ZERO gunsmith experience and although am somewhat mechanical, would feel uneasy doing anything more than just attaching it and going. Is it something that is going to have to be glass bedded or anything like that? I am going to be using it as a hunting rifle only. Thanks guys for any and all help...

I can't tell from the link which particular stock you are referring to, but based on your description, I'm assuming you mean a laminated wood in the pepper finish. If that's the case, being a wood stock, there is rarely a true "drop in" and go option. I say this because many of the aftermarket stocks out there require some minor fitting or finishing to get a proper fit. Unfortunately, there are very few aftermarket stock options for the Abolt, especially the short action models.

If it were me, I'd buy the stock you want and have it properly bedded by a gunsmith. Not only will it ensure a consistent fit of the action to the stock, but that will help to ensure consistent accuracy. It's worth the extra expense. Just my two cents. Good luck.
