NEW GUY bound for iraq - 7.62 x 39 question
« on: December 27, 2007, 07:16:54 AM »
hey guys , new to this site.  i own a few handis  , 223 superlight , 22 sporter . stainless 243, and got a 308 survivor for CHRISTmas. i would like to have a handi  in 7.62 x 39  that i could shoot wolf ammo in . i know that the handi  did not work with wolf ammo and the guy at walmart said the rossi rifle in 7.62 x 39 had been discontinued  also.  my question is can i take another calibor  handi and have it bored to work with wolf ammo???????????        I am a national guardsman with  21+  years and  i wil be  going to iraq in a couple mounths  and hope to spend time on this site to help pass the time.

I don't know anything about the 7.62X39 but want to wish you a safe tour of duty and God bless.

Welcome aboard, ferryboatcaptain!! That would be an expensive way to shoot cheap ammo IMO, a rebore will cost a minimum of $250, more like $350 with the chamber work since there is no H&R barrel that will work for just a rechamber. An alternative would be the Remington Spartan since the Rossi is no longer available.

Thanks for your service!! ;)

It is offered in a blue receiver also, couple of bucks less. Anyone hear how these shoot, would like to have a rifle to shoot cheap ammo, and need the caliber to be .24 plus to be deer legal in Iowa.

If you want to shoot the cheap 7.62x39 ammo, try going to a gunshow and pick up an SKS.

They are made to eat anything you put into it, and they aren't expensive especially if you look for the best deal.

I picked one up last year a Chinese Norinco that was like new, with only 100 rounds through it, for $150, from a guy that was wanting to buy an AR rifle and needed to unload a couple of his guns for cash.

They are fun guns to shoot, and if you get lucky, there are some that shoot pretty decent when it comes to accuracy.

If you can find a new Yugo they are the better shooters.

Stay safe, and Godspeed!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

The hard, recessed primers of milsurp ammo is the main problem, H&R doesn't recommend using any ammo in their firearms that isn't made to SAAMI and ANSI standards, so I can see why they can't justify making changes to allow the use of cheap ammo, those that shoot sporting ammo in the 7.62x39 Handi have no problems, but too many didn't want to and complained about misfires, so they discontinued it.  :(

There are shooting reports on the the Remington Spartans in the Single Shot forum if anyone is interested in them. ;)

In 7.62x39 it has the same non-SAAMI wide-open-loooong throat that the Handi-rifle has in .357 Mag.  (Both have about 3/4" between the end of the neck and engagement of the bullet in the throat!  Sample of 1 in each case.)

Does it shoot?  About as poorly as the .357 Mag in a handi.

(Pardon my pesimism, but TWO new rifles in a row that H&R and Remington screwed up by not putting in a standard chamber!)

I was just looking at a chamber adapter that would allow 7.62 x 39 to be shot in a .308 barrel.  Looks simple enough to me and reasonably priced.  Best of all, it doesn't hurt your existing barrel.

most cheap imported 7.62x39 use a .310 diameter bullet this could cause problems and you would have to modify the adapter for your extractor, however here's a good read http://www.surplusrifle.com/reviews/tigerloudhousecat/index.asp

Stay safe on your trip to the sandbox ferryboatcaptain, we will be praying for you. I for one will keep an eye out for a 7.62x39 H&R barrel for you and perhaps we will have one stashed and waiting for you when you return. I am sure others here will be willing to do the same....<><....:)
