« on: November 10, 2007, 01:39:52 PM »

I am told T-17 is petro based and the butter is water based. i started using t-17 followed by corrosion x when I found out the
Triumph barrel is carbon steel and not stainless. The jury is still out but so far seems to be working ok. I have used butter on all my ML's
and have always found some rust after a long storage. I'll let some time go by and recheck the T-17 and cx method---LS

When I started ML years and years ago, I read many commentaries about care and cleaning and decided to use bore butter as the majority advised. Over the years, I have not been convinced of that older advice because of seeing many ML barrels and actions have rusting problems. I have switched over to petroleum based protectants with relief. I still wash my barrels after firing with a water based detergent, but I use CLP for protection. I have had no problems with the newer approach and my barrels and actons give me fine accuracy.

best,    nrb

Their is a different in T17 but I like bore butter and would stick with it. The triumph barrel is carbon steel if it is blued but the other is stainless with weathersheild.

RICK, You said the Weathershield model is stainless, meaning the bore is stainless?? Where did you come by that information?I have been trying to find out what I could about the triumph since I bought it ,but could find no tech info, specs or help anywhere. I called TC and got no reliable answer. I don,t think the rep had a clue.--LS

The barrel is stainless and the coating is like a light gray or a clear. I would talk to CS. They all ape to be stainless and they were advertised that way. That is one of the selling points of it. The receiver isn't though as you probably know. I am taking T/Cs word and since they haven't lied to me before then that's what ill say. It should be stainless. Just wondering what made you question that it wasn't?

I thought that I read on another site that the barrels for all of the Triumph's are carbon steel, even the Weathershield one.  Someone was saying something like, what's the point of having the Weathershield finish if the inside of the barrel isn't protected, since it's a carbon steel one.  I can't remember where it was though, I'll have to try to find it.

Sounds like someone who has no clue what they are talking about. They are stainless and not carbon. The only carbon steel barrels are the blued and they do not have weather shield.

When I called T/C they told me the Triumph barrels were NOT stainless steel. Apparently why they apply the "Weathershield" finish. I also don't see them refer to the barrels as SS on their web site, that's why I called. I no longer considered the Triumph for just that reason. I like a SS muzzleloader barrel.

You said - "I called TC and got no reliable answer. I don,t think the rep had a clue.--LS"

Well - I've called several times and have gotten confusing answers, wrong answers, and often no answers because they didn't answer the phone and didn't call back either.

Sure do. Ill call them. They had told me when it first came out it was stainless. Something isn't right. I thought it was.

The review on Chuck Hawks.com said that T/C told them it wasn't stainless steel.  Of course, sometimes you have to take what the author of the review says with a grain of salt.  But, he does seem to know the guns themselves most of the time.

I saw another article and the fellow said he was told by fox ridge outfitters that the triumph wasn't stainless, it was carbon steel- i was interested because he referred to corrosion x and i 've been using it for a long time on all my guns.I put a magnet to the barrel  and it stuck hard. Not to say that it's a sure indication . By the way, does it really matter??. The rifle is a real good shooter. __LS

Yeah but how durable is it. This adds a whole new set of questions to it. For instance if you hit it on your tree stand and scratch it will the covering hold up or will it rust now? Now knowing this I would only get the blued version unless this proves to be better.

Its not SS.

Carbon steel barrels with the Weathershield coating product.

They sure like to charge the price of SS!! Besides the color of the barrel, the price jump makes it seem like its SS  ;D
