2007 Ohio deer
« on: December 02, 2007, 11:10:08 AM »
Here is what I posted on the castboolits forum, and figured I would share it with everyone here.  It goes to show you that you don't need $2 a shot sabots and 150gr. of powder to kill deer like they say in the magazines.

Just wanted to let everyone see a couple of pictures of the deer I got this year in Ohio's gun season. Got the doe on the first day, which like was already posted was pouring down rain, and just plain miserable to hunt in, but the deer were out as long as you could stand the cold. It was about a 80-90 yard shot. The buck I got yesterday afternoon after being in the woods for less than 45 minutes. I got both with an NEF Huntsman muzzleloader, 80gr. of FFg Triple Seven powder, a Lyman 454424 boolit using acww out of a black sabot. I have a Millett red dot on top of it too. The buck was maybe 10 yds. closer than the doe was when I shot it. I didn't recover the boolits from either deer. Oh the title is for Al, because he sold me the mold a couple months ago. Enjoy the pics.

P.S. Didn't notice till I had already posted, but the date on the camera was off by one day, I really did get the doe on Monday, and the buck yesterday.

Thanks for the replies fellers.  What impressed me the most about the buck wasn't the size of his antlers (which by the way have the very end broken off on his left side), but the size of his body.  I hadn't harvested a really mature buck before, and the size of him compared to the doe I got Monday was impressive.  He was about 30lb. larger hanging weight, and didn't have a lick of fat on him where as the doe had an inch or two of fat all down her loin.  It was a good thing my god father had a tractor to help me drag that buck out with, otherwise I would probably still be working on it now.  He didn't smell "rutty", so I'm hoping that he'll make good bratwurst.  This was also the first year that I used cast bullets for deer hunting, and would recommend them to anybody, just aim for the lower half of the chest since they don't expand, you need to hit lower in order to have any kind of blood trail close to where you hit them at.  Good luck on your season fellers.
