Help Identifying Rifle
« on: January 06, 2008, 12:48:48 AM »
I'm trying to figure out just what this critter is!  It is marked Navy Arms - Ridgefield, NJ, made by Pedersoli.  The caliber is stamped as 50 Sharps.  A quick check on the chamber and it seems to be over 3" from the face of the breech to chamber step (max. case length?).  The sights are missing.  It has dovetails for the front and rear sights.  It has been drilled and tapped on the barrel for what appears to be scope mounting and the tang is drilled and tapped at approximately 1.5" hole spacing.
QUESTIONS:
1) What is the actual caliber?
2) Where to get ammunition, brass, bullets, load data, etc....
30 Sights: A Lyman 17 seems to fit the front OK, what's some sources for a rear tang sight?

Thanks in advance for you help,
Roger D.

Since you want help ID'ing a rifle, w/o specifying what kind of action it has - I'll have to guess.

If's it's a rolling block, then any sight for the large RB's will be good, and if it's a Sharps clone, then one that fits those types will do - both unless you intend to do very long range BP shooting, incase which you'll need an extra length/tall tang sight.

Jeff's Outfitters has a nice selection, at decent prices: http://www.jeffsoutfitters.com/store.aspx?panel=1&categoryid=67

Buffalo Arms makes factory ammo, Bell makes properly headstamped brass , and Track of the Wolf carries supplies.

BTW - .50 Sharps a.k.a. .50-90 Sharps usually, but your rifle could be a .50-100 - since the "chamber step" that's 3" deep is most likely the leade/rifling start, cartridge overall length ILO max case length.

Hi,
You can do a very basic chamber cast by pushing tissue paper into the rifling and then dripping candle wax into the chamber. It pushes out easily with a cleaning rod. That should help you correctly identify the cartridge.
