45-70 reloading questions for Marlin 1895
« on: January 07, 2008, 04:59:43 AM »
I recently picked up a Marlin 1895 45-70 with the 22".  I started reloading some ammo last night for it and ran across a few questions.

1.)  When using hornady and sierra books to load some 300gr ammo using the same powder the sierra book allowed me to go an extra 4 grains of H4198 or so.  Is this just because of lawyers & safety factors?  I loaded the different bullets by the specs in their respective books, but I was curious about this.

2.)  I have some cast performance 460gr cast with gas checks, but no reloading data.  I'm using H4198 but I don't have a safe starting point, any ideas there?  On the note inside the box of ammo the piece of paper didn't have any load data on it, just a disclaimer.

I've loaded my Marlin 1895 45-70 w/ 22" barrel for many years using Sierra, Hornady, Remington and Speer 300 grain bullets.  All of those bullets do very well with 55 grains of H4198 in Winchester brass with CCI 200 primers.  All of those bullets so loaded produce about 28,000 CUP loads.  Hodgdon provides for a maximum load of 60 grains of H4198 with the Sierra seated to 2.525" in Winchester brass and CCI 200 primers that yielded 40,000 CUP in their test rifle.  You may find that as you work up from 55 grains towards 60 grains the recoil in the Marlin 1895 begins to become unpleasant.

Check with Coyote Hunter for 45-70 loads with the 460 CP and H4198.
We learn something new everyday whether we want to or not.

I am expecting the recoil to get unpleasant quickly with this those rounds.  I only plan to use those for hunting bears, everything else will be target practice and range work.
