Beeman questions
« on: July 18, 2008, 09:01:50 AM »
Been pretty bored lately and have not been able to get to the range to shoot my rifles and decided to get a pellet rifle to shoot in the back yard just to have something to do from time to time.  Rifle must be quiet so the neighbors don't get to upset so I have boiled it down to either the Beenman R7 or the Beeman HW30.  I borrowed a Beeman R9 .20 cal from a guy where my wife works and it was a bit too loud in the back yard.  Both the R7 and the HW30 are listed as being quieter than the R9.  From what I have been reading both rifles are pretty much alike but the R7 has a much better trigger.  For you in the know, is the HW30 trigger pretty bad?  If it is bad can it be lightened some?  Next question is if I decide to get the R7 would the .177 cal be quieter than the .20 cal or both pretty much the same?  This will be pretty much a plinker but on the rare occasion that a rabid squirrel came by at say 20 yards would the R7 be able to take care of it in either caliber or would the .20 be best?  I would not hunt squirrels with either one primarily.  If I were to go squirrel hunting I would use my .22 short for that.  I don't know alot about pellet rifles and hope some of you on here can help me out with these questions.  Thanks.

Snicker,

I have a Beeman R7 .20 cal. We have a 2 acre site in town and I use it for squirrel control at the bird feeders. I like the .20 cal. I also have an older Sheridan Blue Streak that is probably over 40 years old. It is also .20 caliber and has accounted for lots of varmints up to the size of crows and possums.

I have a new RWS 3x9 scope ordered for the R7 as my current Gamo is erratic. I will let you know how the new scope performs. For your purposes, I would buy the R7. I love mine.

R-7 ditto. also Diana 35 or detuned model 34 so it shoots at around 700fps.   I bought the model 34 for exactly the same reason you are looking at a pellet gun. I saw this one in .177 for a good price and just bought it.  haven't been sorry. every pellet goes where i call it at 30 feet. I shoot it everyday and it is breaking in nicely.  I haven't even tried it with the scope yet.  It really helps with your shooting form, breath control, trigger control, sight alignment sight picture, it should translate very nicely to your cartridge rifle shooting.

Thanks for the responses.  Have decided to go with the R7 in .20 cal if I can find one at a decent price.  Might look around for a good used one locally.
