remington 1100 20ga skeet
« on: January 15, 2008, 02:44:13 PM »
The gentleman that has the o/u's also has twelve and twenty gauge 1100's.  I looked at the 20, and it looked good.  Although it is still a semi (and I will still have to pick up my empties when finished shooting), I thought that if it was a good deal I might buy it.  I could use it for a while and then maybe trade it in when I find an over/under.  The guy is asking $475 Cdn.  Is this a decent price?
Thanks,
Swamp

Sounds a tad high to me at least it would in American dollars and is roughly half the price of some used O/Us by the better known folks. Unless you just want to keep picking up hulls I'd wait and find a good used O/U with choke tubes or proper fixed chokes for the game.

Why not just wait and get what you really want? It'll save the hassles of selling an auto later. If it'll take a reasonable amount of time to save the extra money, that's what I'd do.  Skeet will still be there in six months or so.

Sounds like good advice.  Which over/under?  Most of the members at the club have Browning, a few have Beretta.  Has anyone seen the Savage?  I heard that it is made by Rizzini.  What about the Stevens?  I have a Baikal MP153 semi, and like it, are their O/U any good (izh 27 or Spartan 310) Are these cheaper guns OK, or should I just pony up the extra cash for a "B" gun?  What should I look for in a used over/under?
Sorry for all the questions, but new to this clay game.
Thanks,
Swamp

Some of the guns you're asking about really haven't been around long enough for them to prove they can or can't last. It's a gamble you'll have to decide if you want to take. Several of the Russian guns are beginning to show up at our local range and folks using them seem somewhat satisfied with them. For the most part the folks using them tho are not the better shooters or those who shoot the most. I've seen no real problems crop up with them yet however.

Only one of our really good shooters has shown up with one and he has always shot a Remington 1100 that looks like it's had about a million rounds thru it. His scores are down drastically with the Russian O/U.

If you're a casual shooter who goes out once a week or less and fires 50 rounds or so a day when you go out I'd think most of the guns mentioned will last you many years. If you're like some at our club who shoot three times a week and 100 rounds or more each time out then I'd say you best get the top of the line guns if you expect it to last.

Brownings, Berettas, Ruger Red Label, Remington 32/3200,  Winchester and such are proven and have lasted almost forever and likely will continue to. The newer ones have not had time to prove themselves as to whether they will or will not hold up over the long haul.
