Using the Handi iron sights

Ok, I haven't shot iron sights since I was able to afford a scope for my Benjamin pellet rifle.  I remember the sight picture I was taught in 4H, and how it didn't make any sense to me.  I looked on Wikipedia and confirmed that my memory is correct and it still doesn't make any sense to me.  Does anyone here use open sights as depicted here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_sights   The way I was taught to shoot, the sight picture they use in the examples would have me hitting the very bottom of the target ring.

The reason I ask this is because I was thinking of narrowing my front sight a bit with a file.  It feels too wide to get a good sight picture.  What are your thoughts?

They are lining the sites up the way I do but I want the bottom half of my group covered by the front blade.
As far as the front blade width. Your brain knows were the middle is. You just have to learn to trust it.
I find the less I think about it the better Iron sights work.

I think that may be my problem sometimes.  I concentrate on it too much.  I seem to do better if I shoulder, point, and shoot without pondering it too much.

Ok, that is how I do it as well.  I never understood having the point of impact 8 inches or so higher than the point of aim.

Target shooters use a 6 O'clock hold, where the top of the front sight is aligned with bottom of the bull, typically this would be used so the target isn't covered because you can't hit what you can't see. Front sights tend to blend into a black bull, so they hold at the bottom of it and their POI is set to impact the center of the bull, hopefully in the X-ring.

equal height, equal light, and I set my iron sights for POI right in the middle of the front blade, middle from left to right and at the topline of the front blade. That translates to what PartsMan and PPCFlyer said. Even when I was shooting competitive police combat matches I used this system, as did everyone on the team, because we shot at distances which varied from (IIRC) from 50 to 5 yards all in the same match (while under a time limit)....<><....
