waterproof sprays
« on: January 05, 2008, 04:14:40 AM »
I am thinking about getting a can of the waterproof spray to  put on my every day shoes and maybe my deer blind .
How well do the sprays work?

I recommend Hunt Dri, it works better than anything else and best of all, it doesn't stink like the typical silicone sprays. I use the concentrate, seems to be the best buy.

The 3M Scotchgard Heavy Duty Water Repellent really works well and costs less than HuntDri, although the HuntDri concentrate looks intriguing.  I've found that 3M Scotchgard Outdoor Water Shield also works well.

One thing you have to remember though is no spray on product is really waterproofing.

The Hunt-dri concentrate is mixed with water, clothing soaked, then wrung out, I then put it in the washer on spin only and collect the liguid from the drain hose for reuse. I tried the spray once, on a pair of cordura boots, it works but the concentrate costs less, I think it could be used in a spray bottle for something like boots that you wouldn't want to spin in the washer, but best of all, there's no odor after it's dry. ;) Supposedly Walmart carries it now, but I've not seen it in mine yet.

my main thing I want to use it for in my sneakers to keep my feet dryer from walking in the damp grass or when walking in parking lots during the rain and stepping into puddles.

the deer blind is just a after thought.

I was thinking about putting Thompson's water seal on the inside of the blind

It will work fine if your not in the water a bunch. I used to use it but it turns out not to last but maybe on application. I normally wear a pair of Danner Boots all the time so I don't worry about it because they are waterproof.  I take it that your blind is like a wood. I took some of the Black Plastic Tarp like you can get at Home Depot or any store like it and I wrapped it around mine and cut it to shape. I took my staple gun and secured it. Then I took some camo fabric and stapled it to the tarp and spray painted the outside too to camo it. Just put some other brush around it to. My blind hasn't had water in it since. Get the plastic as thick as you can because I have had some one one blind for about 10 years in the same spot. Its cheap. I normally have a bunch on hand from the garden and then my brother gives me a bunch he keeps to cover his pool.

my blind is a cheap pop up one I bought at dicks for about $50 to try and see how I would like it and learn with.

A few weeks ago I was going to hunt in the rain out of it so I took an old camo poncho  and tied it over the top of it, this worked ok but the sides still got a little wet I on the other hand stayed dry. no drips from above

I just want to shoes to be good enough to keep my feet dry when I am washing the fire trucks, walking in grass with due OR from small puddles, nothing real heavy.

Ohh ok. I like using my blinds when it is real wet. I have a ladder stand that a friend built and its on a huge oak and I modified it with a small pop up blind on the top for those wet days.
