Shot the new Shiloh
« on: July 25, 2003, 11:20:58 AM »
:D Hi all.
Well found time to shoot that new #1 Shiloh.I took 100 rounds with me when I picked up the rifle I was heading south to Kenny Wasserburgers range south of Newcastle WYO. to hopfully finding Kenny out there to shoot a few rounds with him.But it was a work day for Kenny so he was not there.I forgot some people still have to work to eat.Let me tell you that range was layed out good.I didnt shoot with out getting Kenny's ok.
When I got home I was going to shoot in my back yard but the shells would not fit the tight chamber,so I had to pull 200 rounds and resize all the cases with a low profile shell holder to be able to push the whole case into the sizing die up to the rim.I was using .30-40 kreg cases drawn out to 2.5" in .40 caliber(.40-70 ss).So I loaded up a few and headed to the range and finished fire forming the cases.I put a bunch down range and 18 cut and a few Henry took.
Now with all the cases fire formed and more than 300 down range the rifle shoots better than any of the blackpowder rifles I have Even better than my prised .40-65 high wall.
I had a can of swiss 1 1/2 f in my mag.so I used it the last time to load up 40 to try it,I dont much favor the swiss powder I feel it burns to hot in a 34"barrel and the fouling get a bit to hard but a little more blowtubing it does ok,But the Shiloh likes it.The first test load was loaded with .060" compression with a Win mag primer drilled out flash hole and a 420 grain 3 grease groove PJ.mould bullet cased at 1-40 lead tin,it put 9 in 2- 1/2 "at 200 yards.and the clean barrel fouling shot was out 6"high.I guess I better rethink  on that swiss powder.with GOEX cart compressed .210"it will hold 3" at 200 which I think is good.I havent had a chance to shoot it at 500 mtrs yet to see if the load holds up.Some times when the bullet dropes back down into subsonic arround 350 mtrs.they tend to do goofy things at a certen range but settle down again.

Lead Pot--Congratulations on the new Shiloh!  When I am lucky enough to get one, it's like my first bicycle all over again, only better.

Sounds like it's gonna be a shooter.  My Shilohs all have tight chambers, too.  My wife's 40-65 won't take a bullet any bigger than .408 on the first driving band, period.  I also know what you mean about having rounds not chamber.  Makes two of us.  Try squeezing the Goex a little more, say .300 to .330.  When you find that compression sweet spot, you will be amazed at how clean it burns and how accurate it shoots--and the fouling stays soft.  Shoot straight, rdnck.

Your right about getting a Shiloh,I think the fealing in your hand just makes it shoot better. This isnt my first Shiloh I just wish I would have kept the once I have had in the past, but in my younger days when you need the money something has to go I had originals and a early Shiloh I waited 5-1/2 yrs to get. This one will stay with me.I also have a Silhouette comming arround Christmas.
Your right on the GOEX neading compression.I been using that powder since Dupond,I like it.I compress my .40-65 .275.and the .45-70 .300.and the .45-3 1/4 .300.with verry good results. When I do my part they hold a minute and halve.
Catch you on the line sometime rdnck.

Hi Kenny.

I talked to your Brother Jim,he was out cutting hay and I did'nt feel right  shooting when he was out close working. It was just as well for the rounds I had loaded did not fit the chamber.I had to pull 200 rounds and rework the cases to fit.
Kenny that is a nice range,I been by three times now once it was late in the evening then three weeks ago and again last weekend I was passing by on my way to the Blackhills.I can see why your Family settled in that erea with ith creek and good grass you have.It really stands out.
I missed your match, I was down with  a stomach problem I had to get worked on.I WILL make the next one.

Kenny you want to watch all those hours or you will be in the shape I'm in when you retire.HI.HI.I been through that but I'm making it up now.

Leadpot, :D

Jim is my Dad! LOL he just had his 66th birthday today. I talked to him for about a Hr on the phone just a bit ago. Seems he spent most of last night fighting fires. Had a fire of his own on our 6x6 Firetruck. But had my  young cuzin Andrew with him. Dad says he is good with the hose. I am 120 miles from the ranch in Gillette. Thats where I live and have my home. I try to make it down to see the folks when I can but of late its not real often. So I try to keep in touch on the phone as often as possible.

Yes the ranch is quite a place. My Grandpa John knew what he was doing when he settled there.

Its quite the range we really enjoy shooting on it when we can and to have folks come to shoot also. I have alot of work into building the targets and Dad and I have done a bit of dirt work on the berms too.

Jim is the oldest of 3 Wasserburger boys, sons of John and Katheren Wasserburger.

Kenny (me) is the oldest of 3 Wasserburger boys sons of Jim and Irma Wasserburger, My folks. Who live on the Family ranch today.

My Great Grandpa Jacob's Ranch is in the NW corner of Neb, a little place called Mont Rose.  300 yards from Jacob's Grave is the marker where Buffalo Bill Cody killed the Cheyenne war Chief Yellow hand 6 weeks after the Custer fight in 1876. Jacob and others built the small Church there at Mont Rose in 1881.

As the story goes my Great Grandpa's Jacob Wasserburger and Charles Zerbst where in Deadwood SD at the time of the fight, cutting ties for the railroad. The Fight today is remembered as the Battle of War Bonnet Creek.

Just a bit of history for you.

Kenny that is a lot of good  history in your family to be prout of.It took a lot of currage to open the country like Wyoming where the Mississippi river was considered the fronteier, and the hardshipes involved back then just getting there.
That trip down from Gillette on 85 is a long lonley treck,I have taken a few side roads just looking arround off to the east north of the range and on a few two tracks,it is wide open country but it has it's beauty.
Wyoming is greener this year than I have seen it in a few years.I hope your Dad gets enough hay this year to feed the stock through the winter.A few years ago the Farmers arround me sent hay out west.I think it should be done more, hay goes to wast arround hear.
Catch you at your next benefif match Kenny.
