Encore 25-06 light primer strikes w/ Hornady Light Mag 117gr.
« on: January 02, 2008, 08:56:16 AM »
I have an Encore in a 25-06 with a 26" heavy barrel.  I am shooting Hornady 117gr light mag bullets.  The problem I am having is every so often I am getting a failure to fire but with a dent in the primer.  Is this the rifle or the bullets?  Is anyone else having any similar issues?  Any help would be appreciated...

Casey-- Have you checked the headspace with the rounds you are shooting? The Encore will do what you are describing if you have excessive headspace. With excessive headspace a good deal of energy is expended moving the cartridge case forward until it seats on the shoulder leaving insufficient energy to fire the primer even though the primer is dented.

I really don't think I should be having this problem with a new gun and factory ammo.  But no I have not checked the head spacing.  If it is a problem with rifle I will send it back to the factory.

Mine did that after a trigger job by a local smith and adding a hammer extension. Got a heavier hammer spring from the "censored man" and re-did the trigger and all is fine. I had push-offs too.

There are a variety of factors and combinations thereof which could be causing your problems, but since the 25-06 chamber is TC's problem child, I'd first check the interior dimensions. A local had one of these a few weeks ago, and it was beyond SAAMI specs. But because he is an avid reloader, I showed him how to deal with the situation, and he's had no more problems and even took a nice deer last week.

Someone shooting factory loads, however, would not have those options, and if it is indeed an oversized chamber, a trip back to TC is in order so that they can send you a new barrel.

Can you do a cerrosafe cast?

Factory Encores are famous for light hammer strikes when used with a hammer extension.  Got mine with a .50 muzzle loader barrel:  There were no misfire problems.  Then I installed a .30-06 barrel.  Several guys at the range saw me put the barrel on the gun and told me that there would probably be misfires until the hammer spring was replaced or the hammer extension was removed.  They were right.  First round was a misfire.  Took  the hammer extension off and no more misfires.  Since then the hammer spring has been replaced with a stronger one.

Yes, some misfire problems are caused by head space.

There are a lot of other threads on this board that address the problem of misfires and hammer extensions.

That is probably what the problem is I will remove the hammer extension and see what happens.  Thanks for all the help...

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 7MM MAG BARREL AND HORNADY HEAVY MAG AMMO.

ONCE I REMOVED THE HAMMER EXTENSION, NO MORE MISFIRES.
