Seirra soft point performance on game.
« on: February 03, 2008, 03:28:17 PM »
Just got a gross of 160 gr. soft point boat tail bullets for my 7mag.  I have absolutely no experience with these bullets on game however.  Anyone have any insight as to how these are made, or how they compare to say a partition or a core lokt or somthing of the like?
I am not afraid to make an example out of you

I've had lots of success with the 140 grain in 7 Mag, 280, and 7mm-08.  In my 7-08 it is the most accurate bullet I've tested.  Performance on whitetail deer compares with Corelokts in my opinion.  Don't ever recall using their 160 grain bullet.

It is a very accurate bullet.
I used it in 3 different 7 mags in the late 70's & early 80's to harvest a bunch of Whitetails & in those days I used the 7's for groundhog & up. The bullet is a little soft at 7mmMag vel. up close, but would always penetrate more than enough & was quite effective. It would not be my first choice for Elk, but used wisely it would work. I do not know if the jacket is the same thickness now. I believe the vel. was about 3,100fps if I recall.

I don't have any experience with a 7mm, but the Sierras (Game Kings) I've shot out of my .25-06 and .270 are very accurate.  I've shot antelope with 130 grain .270 and they did the job quite well.  If I were hunting bigger mulies, I'd probably opt for a little tougher bullet though.

Great deer and pig bullet out of my 7x57. I probably wouldn't push them much over 2900 fps and expect good performance up close, even then I wouldn't try to smash an elks shoulder with them.

I've used Sierra Gameking 250 gr. in a Wby .340 since about 1980.  I have shot mainly moose and maybe 10 or so deer, one wolf, lots of coyotes and partridge.  On moose and deer I have never had a bullet come apart no matter how close they were.  The only thing that really comes apart are coyotes, and that is real neat.  Partridge should be hit in the head or obvious reasons.  The bullets only travel about 2750 fps, maybe if they motored along at 3100 it would be a different story, I don't know.

I haven't tried the Gameking in my .375 H&H yet as I am kind of stuck on 260 gr. Accubond.  The Gameking are a lot cheaper so who knows.

This past season I was going to replace my Sierra 130's in my 270 (they seemed soft from the previous years experience), even had a box of interbonds bought, but time was a problem. I ended up loading up some more of the sierras between me and a nephew 4 more deer fell to it(2 whitetails and 2 Mule deer)  and I have lost my motivation to replace the load, but that is on deer and under 3000 fps.

At 7mag speeds and big animals I would wonder.

The gameking bullets by Serria are fine those boat tails don't fly streight at 200 yds
