a sampling
« on: January 17, 2008, 12:56:09 AM »
well here's a sample of the end product. all the questions i asked and all the money i spent ( much to my wifes dis-stress ), time reading and re-reading and finally setting down and trying my hand at loading. the pic shows 6 of the 25 rounds i made up for the 45-70 ( NEF said it will be here anytime now  ::) ) .
the 3 on the left are 405 grain flat nose and the 3 on the right are 405 grain hollow points. they sit on new winchester brass and are pushed by 45 grains of varget.
the flat nose are pushed by 28 grains of hodgdon 4198.  i tried my hand at crimping with the flat nose, i used RCBS dies, and i think them came out purty good, although i think i should have used CCI primers, not the winchester's i did use. i'll see how they shoot. they fit into the chamber of my buddies 45-70 handi just fine at a c.o.l. of 2.554
i just thought i'd share my efforts. thanks to everyone here who helped me, and put up with my questions. a thank you goes out to stimpy for the bullets and guidance.

glenn ( noobie boolit loader ) ;D

Generally speaking it is not particularly necessary to crimp for single shot rifles. You can if it makes you happy but it's not really needed.

You did good GRASSHOPPER  :D , let us know how they shoot . But be warned you may get to the point that you enjoy the loading as much as you do shooting .

them 45/70s will grab you. good choice of caliber, good choice of rifle, and good choice of components. if you want to experiment down the road try some 3031, it did well in my buffalo hunter. dan

stimpy,

when do you reach the point of no return?? if i spend 18-20 (or more) hours a week reloading for 4 hours a week at the range, have i reached that point? or is it the point when you walk out of your reloading room the wife asks, "who the hell are you and what are you doing in my house?"

Your still good till you hit the point that you are buying brass & bullets for rounds that you don't have a gun for yet , you load up a bunch of test loads only to relize that you can't shoot them till you buy another gun .

Thats the point of no return .  ;)
