Browning model 1895
« on: March 05, 2008, 04:13:44 AM »
I'm considering buying a Browning model 1895 (the 1990s limited production rifle) in either 30/06 or 30/40, depending on what gun I can find.  Does anyone shoot a '95 in either caliber?

If yes,

How is accuracy?

Is felt recoil more then a modern bolt action rifle or a Browning BLR?

Have you mounted a receiver peep sight or side mounted scope on the rifle?

I now own a Browning model 65 in 218Bee and it's an accurate, fine rifle to shoot.  In the past, I've owned the model 92 in 44 mag and the 1886 SRC.  Again, both great guns and I'm sorry I sold them.

Any information is greatly appreciated.

Yes.  .30-06.  My main game rifle for the last 8 or 9 years.

With my 165gr handloads, 1.25" @ 100yds, 2.25" @ 200yds

Recoil?  Is it supposed to?

A receiver sight with a blade front would be great.  Mine has a tang sight and blade front.  Personally believe that any attempt at mounting a scope would be an abomination.  Would be offset too far for any comfort or effectiveness.  It would also destroy the balance.  Even though I have a sling, I quite often carry it one handed with my middle finger hooked around the front of the magazine and thumb hooked over the back of the chamber.  Sounds awkward until you try it.

Great rifle.  Wish that I had found one years before.  BOL

I've shot a .30-06 & a .405, both Miroku's.

The -06 was negligible, since the M95s a relatively heavy gun for that caliber.

The .405 felt just about "right", a nice solid thump, without being uncontrolable.

The .405 was a friend's, and he had mounted a small XS peep atop the flat bolt-top & replaced the front blade with a higher, XS whiteline blade.

I don't have the Brownings but I do shoot two Winchester 1895s.

A carbine in 30US is a hoot to shoot.  Those long pieces of lead sure do hit with authority.

My 1895 rifle was reworked to 405WCF and is also a hoot.

I prefer cast bullets and find recoil is not a problem.

On the rifle I had an aperture sight mounted and the carbine has the factory sights.  I prefer the aperture set up but your eyes might be better than mine.
