torn between to calibers
« on: January 15, 2008, 12:48:34 AM »
Hello everyone i am in the market for a new handi and i am torn between the 270, and 308 bull barrel which is more accurate.  Also has anyone shot the 280 barrell and did you like the grouping. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Believe it or not, I have all 3 of the calibers you have listed.  For my vote, the 280 is the one to choose.  It is right on the heels of the 7 mm Mag, performance wise, and is at least as accurate as either of the others.  The only fly in the ointment is ammo availability.  It's just plain hard to find 280 ammo some times.  For ammo concerns, the 270 or 308 is better.

I AGREE.
as far as dropping into a store to buy ammo you will find more places with a better selection of the 308 ammo.
2nd best to find ammo and a selection would be the 270win.
3rd would be the 280 in my area anyway.

all three are great and have an excellent track record, and if you reload or have a buddy that does than you can
open up more ammo possibilities.

I vote for the .280 also. Mine will shoot 1/2" groups all day with a relatively mild recoil. I live near a Cabelas and they have a good supply of .280 ammo, but I reload also so its not an issue. i haven't shot the .270 or .308 but my guess is you cant go wrong with any of them.

They are all good calibers.
Get the barrel you want.

The 280 is 26" long for max velocity.
The 308 is available in heavy barrel that will stay cool longer.
The 270 is in the short light regular barrel that defines the word handi.

If I had t choose I'd go with the 308.  Any store that carries guns and or ammo always has 308, also high quality 308 surplus is often available for even great savings.  The other two barrels are available on the accessory barrel program / 270 -$87 for plain barrel $116 for stainless steel and the 280 is available for $106.

My 270 is very accurate with a fouled barrel and 130 grain Remington Core Lokts at $14.47 per box from Wal-Mart. Have not found a hand load that will beat the core lokts so that what I feed it.

If you only want one High Powered barrel, a 30/06 combines all the best qualities of all three.........

The Beauty of the Handi Rifle is that you don't have to choose...... Get all three!!
