extractor more dependable?
« on: January 18, 2008, 02:20:09 PM »
I have always had trouble with stuck cases with my 223 ejector barrel and recently had a stuck case on the 30-06 barrel w/ ejector. with the 30-06 the chamber wasn't degreased properly but still...

My question is, Is the new extractor system less finicky. Using direct force (assuming that's how it works) rather than a spring seems like it would work better

I am thinking about sending my frame back to get a 223 or 22-250 barrel on, hoping the new system works better.

Lurking on the forum here it seems there is alot of resistance to the extractor but I am curious to try one.

 Am I way off?
Dave

See the FAQs and Help for info on making an ejector work well. Extractors are positive, but they don't lift the case out of the chamber much, aren't as convenient as ejectors, but neither is a stuck case in the heat of the moment!! :o :-X

thanks , I was thinking it was positive,
but I still need another 223 barrel. I had tried the bb behind the spring and still had trouble. I thought I would polish the chamber sooo... I used some grinding compound on an empty case, got in a hurry and careless, and now have excessive head space.  :o::) very embarrassing, sooo will try a new 223 barrel.

The tips in the FAQs recommend a very mild abrasive like Flitz, valve grinding compound is way too aggressive as you found out, sounds like a good donor barrel for a rechamber to something a bit bigger, or maybe just to an Ackley version. ;)

I prefer the extractor for its reliability. It really works well and is much for forgiving of dirty field conditions we sometimes get into.

I tried loading the 38-55 yesterday with a reload bullet and found the extractor to be o.k. move the case about 1/4" out I don't think fast reloading for a second shot is going to happen so make the first shot count when deer hunting.
My 06 Handi was finicky until I polished the parts with 1500 wet and dry paper and light oil I reasseblied the parts and the problem is corrected now the empty shells fly over the shoulder.
