Ruger Sights
« on: January 17, 2008, 06:57:20 AM »
I have a Ruger Super Blackhawk that I bought it used at a gun show.  It is stainless, and was very clean.  Got it for $375.  It shoots very low.  I raised the rear sight up as high as I could get it and it still shoots low.  I put a laser bore sight on it and it was about 2" low across a 12' room.  Can you buy higher blades for the rear sight?  Or do I have to replace the front sight with a lower sight?  I Googled Ruger pistol sights, but haven't found anything yet.  Oh, I was shooting cheap white box Winchester 240 gr. hollowpoints.  I tried the Winchester Platinum tips at 250 gr. and it did the same thing.  Thanks.

Since I am shooting low, would not a heavier bullet shoot even lower?  I've thought about filing down the front sight.  It is blued, I guess I could paint it with flat black metal paint.  Rear sight can be replaced with a higher blade, just don't know where to find one.  I couldn't "Google it"  I would like to shoot heavier bullets, like 265 gr or heavier, to be a match for a rifle.  I want to get a .44 mag rifle as companion.

The heavy bullet starts and travels slower than a light bullet ( check the tables in reloading manuals to prove this ) .

Now the gun starts to recoil bbl up and back at the same time with either bullet , so the slower ( heavy ) bullet takes longer to go out the bbl . giving the bbl longer to rise which will send the bullet down range higher than a slow ( light ) bullet !
if all else stays the same , when you file down a front sight you raise the bullet impact .
check brownells for rear sights if anyone has them they do .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Thanks, I will try the some 265 gr when I can.  It that doesn't work, I will try Brownells, and if that doesn't work, last resort, file the front sight.  I want to use heavier bullets.  I think they penetrate deeper in deer and larger game.  Would you use solids or hollowpoints?

I like jacketed HP's but most here seem to like lead with some type solid . our deer are smallish and most any good bullet will pass thru.
it will most likely be possible to get a lower front sight as that's the route most take easier than a rear  i believe the collective wisdom is that it is better to keep the sights as tucked in close to the gun/bore as possible . it aids in accy. and promotes a clean appearance to the weapon . it also limits the size of things hanging off to cut shirts, jackets, holsters , skin etc. while carrying the gun .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

You need to contact Ruger. They produce sights of differing heights for your situation.. I prefer the Hornaday 300 grain XTP hollow point for the 44 mag. It kills deer quite well and expands reliably from my DW 8 inch. And the previous poster was correct, heavier bullets print high than lighter weights with the same sight setting.
