Anyone shooting a Savage LRPV?

I ordered one this week (should be in tomorrow.) Are any of you guy's shooting one? I got it for target shooting,and egg shoots. I'm thinking Varget would work well behind a 68-69gr HPBTM Bullet. I want it to shoot accurate,speed is a secondary concern. If any of you guy's are shooting one,please let me know what you think of it,and what powders you are using. Thanks, Ron

I'm guessin you mean this gun: http://www.savagearms.com/12PrecVarm.htm but you didn't say what caliber you bot it in. But then, I don't do long range shootin or "egg shootin" so maybe there is a standard caliber that is used and I'm just showin what I don't know.

Dave,my mistake! It 's in .223 cal. I'm kinda a accuracy nut. I shoot allot off  the bench,and now they are shooting  spinners,and eggs on golf tee's at long yardage.The 223cal guns are really making a good showing at matches here in the Mid/West. They don't shoot the 69gr. bullets very fast,but really shoot some impressive groups at long (300-500)yds range. Those eggs sure are small at 300+yds,then add in the wind drift,and it's a heck of a fun game! You have the right gun http://www.savagearms.com/12PrecVarm.htmI think from all I have heard about it,and seen on the range,it just might be the ticket for this,and maybe P-Dog shooting (we don't have any here). I watched one shooter consistently hit the eggs at 500yds in a cross wind( I'm sure he is an exceptionally good shooter though). I've noticed that Savage is building a F Class Bench gun. They are really listing to what the shooters want,that's a refreshing and, big change from most company's. I'm getting more impressed with Savage every day,super accurate guns,that don't break the bank,and extreemly good customer service. Ron

I've had the gun for a couple of days now,and I'm going to the range to break in the barrel (it's 27 Degrees) so heating up the barrel shouldn't be a problem. I'll post the results,if I get any on target shooting done today. Ron

First trip to the range had the gun shooting in the low .2's CTC. I'm pretty impressed with it,now I have to eat crow,about my statements,on the accutrigger! This is the target accu trigger,and it breaks clean at 8oz. I hope to get more shooting in tomorrow,with diffrent bullets,and loads. Ron

sounds like that gun just wont shoot. if i were you id get rid of it. .2's just wont cut it for a varmint gun. just kidding. id say that one is a definite keeper. i wasnt sure about the accutriggers either till i had spent some time with them. now i wouldnt mind having them on all of my guns. good shooting and keep the reports coming. you might just talk me into getting one.

That's what I like to hear!!!  Congrats! There is nuthin like a "first outin" with a new gun and it gives you some great groups. You know it will only get better from there.

Thanks,Guy's! It's gonna be a keeper for sure. I got to shoot it again yesterday @ 200yds,and it stayed right at .5,and one group at.3 (got lucky). I'm using 50gr. V-Max's and Benchmark powder. I tried (not done yet) Varget,and I can't seem to make it work for me? I'm going to a heavier bullet 55-69grs maybe that's where the Varget will work? Some of the guy's that have them,say they really like the heavier bullets best.I've got some 55 V-Max's coming,and some Sierra 69HPBT Match bullets coming this week. I noticed that in the owners manual that Savage uses the 69gr. bullet for accuracy testing. I can't wait to try them out. They should be good for long range shooting. Ron

I  wasn't a big fan of the accu triggers,but this gun has me eating crow! It came with the trigger set at 8oz.  My dealer told them (Savage) that the first thing I would do,was to replace the trigger. So someone at Savage adjusted the trigger,and put the note in with the gun,that it would go down to 4oz. and be safe. I adjusted it down to 2oz. and it still worked,but was so touchy,that when you depressed the accu trigger blade,then touched the main trigger it went off. I've got it set at 6oz. now and it is great. I've let a couple of my friends shoot it,and the first thing they said was,: You won't have to replace that trigger! I've never had a "stock gun" shoot this accurate,to say I'm impressed with it would be an understatement.Ron

maybe ill have to tell my dealer the same thing if i order one. i would love a trigger that light, havent gotten to shoot one for a while. i think i will have to add the LRPV to my short list.

Ron,I don't think you would be unhappy with this gun! I had another popular brand,had the action squared,and blue printed,after market barrel,Jewel trigger,ect. and It wouldn't even come close to this gun in performance. My wife used to refure to it as the "money pit"  and smile.I did get to run some 69gr. Sierra HPBT Match bullets through it today. Only got to shoot at 100yds. and it was almost boring,even in the wind,(I think I've found my new favorite bullet). The 50's and 55's would group,3 or four in the same hole,then a gust would take one,or two out of the group. The 69's didn't have any problem with the wind at all. The more I shoot,Heavy bullets the better I like them!. The Varget powder would shoot two in one group,and three in another,in a horzontal string. The W748 just put them all in the same hole. It's about the dirtiest powder I have,but seems to shoot the best (go figure). I guess that's what they make Hoppe's for!Ron

I had good weather today to shoot in. 55Degrees and hardly any wind to speak of. I shot some "foulers" then shot 10 shots @ 100. They did fine,but I think the gun is shooting a touch high,because after the group showed in the scope,I shot at the hole. This made the last shots go higher. I adjusted it to center on a sighter target,then went to 200yds. Got a nice group,but pulled one shot low. This gun seems to really like W748  powder. A little more powder tweeking,and I think she will be there. Ron

Yeah,the more I shoot this gun. The more I'm amazed at it's accuracy!The 69gr. bullets really make it shoot well,should be fun at the egg shoots. I really need a day with sun so I can get an accurate reading on the crono. Then I can run the numbers through the ballistics software,and plot a real trajectory/wind drift curve. When I went to the Winchester site (now owned and operated by Hogdon) it listed one load,with no starting load,just 24.5 and gave it as a maximum load. The Sierra manual list 748 as their accuracy load @ 25.5 W748? Winchester list their  load (24.5) shooting at 2870fps,where the Sierra accuracy load @25.5 as running at 2700fps. One Hundred seventy fps. diffrence,and shooting faster with 1 grain less powder, Strange? Until I can crono the load,I won't know which one is close to the correct numbers. Ron
