357 max for rifle
« on: January 18, 2008, 12:33:01 PM »
Im going to start loading 357 max for a NEF rifle. Do I have to adjust my loads or is ok to use pistol load specs?

I'm in the same boat, very little data from rifles, most is from 10-14" barrels, but that really is no problem. You can use the pistol load data, pressures will be the same, your longer barrel will just add 100-150 fps over the singleshot pistol. If the data you see is from a revolver then you'll gain another 150-200 fps for the lack of a cylinder gap. So your rifle may produce as much as 400 fps more than a revolver using the same data. But really, velocities vary even if your rifle were the same as that used by the data source, only a chronograph will tell you what those loads do from your rifle. Of course you should always start light and work up to your loads but basically, if the data is safe in a pistol it will be safe in your rifle, but faster. That's not a bad thing is it?

Bad? Thats horrible. I hate when my bullets go faster. ::)

Good to hear. I was worried the pressure would change significantly.

Thanks

I load .357 MAX for a 15" Encore and a Handi. Have found that my Handi doesn't care what I feed through it, anything from 125 to 210 grain shoots equally well. My Encore doesn't really like anything under 158 grains. Other than that, no changes.

I have been thinking on getting the 357max for encore also.
hope you don't mind me asking.
has anyone shot 357 mag or 38 spec. in these with good results?
Thought this would serve as a cheaper plinker load for the kids.
Thanks kurt.

357 mag is a blast to shoot. Recoil and muzzle blast in my handi is about like a 22 mag. The Ol' Lady is very recoil sensitive and she loves it.

Im using a peep sight. I can zap softball size pumpkins 60-70-80 yards from standing position.  Ive got a safe full of guns, but my max
is the funnest. cheap no recoil. Just plain fun to shoot.

I shoot .38 spcl and .357 mag a lot. My Handi was very accurate with both.
