Savage fp-10
« on: January 14, 2008, 12:30:49 PM »
I was thinking about re-barreling a 308 to a 7mm-08 what barrel makers does any one suggest. The rifle is to shoot for fun at the range and maybe some hunting. Any suggestions would be welcome.

don't take this wrong, But why would you want to do this? the 7-08 is nothing more then a 308 necked down to .284.

You will get very little improvement if any,you will also find it harder to find brass and loaded rounds.

and you will loose the ability to use inexpensive mil surplus rounds, use heavy bullets, you will find all kinds of factory offerings.

This rifle never shot well for me  ,that's why I wanted to switch barrels. I have a 243  that i just love ,but wanted to step up. I sometimes hunt on farm land and the ranges are 250-300 yards. While the 243 has done  me justice i wanted a little heavier bullet. I had really hoped the .308 was going to be a tack driver , but I guess, I got a lemon on this one. If i wasn't superstitious on this I would go with a 308 again.

Midway sells the Adams and Bennet barrels already threaded and chambered for the Savage I have had good luck with them. Easy to swap over just need the barrel nut wrench a 308 go  nogo set of gauges that you can rent. they come in the factory contour so they fit the stock.

I can understand the rifle not shootig well, I had a Remington 700 ADL in 30-06 that wouldn't shoot for anything I spent a  lot of time and money trying to find a load it liked adn have work done  and nothing worked. I ended up selling it all together at a huge loss

Have you checked the head sapce, the crown and the condition of the barrel?
Was this rifle bought new or used?

You a handloader? if so try diffrent seating depths

I tried everything I could think of bedding the stock, different ammo ,different scope checked crown -you name and i most likely did it. I figured I would just re-barrel it and if it still shot poorly I would send it away. I did buy new. I could never figure this rifle out, looks like it should be a 1 hole shooter but it never lived up to that expectation.

what about your scope, have you tried switching to a scope you know is good?

If you have you may want to think about trading this in on another rifle. at some point it may be the best choice it could be other problems beside the barrel or a lot of little ones

Howdy folks.I'm new here but had to jump in.I've got two 10fp's in.223 and .308.Both are tack drivers.I did change a barrelon a standard 110 that had accuracy problems. The new barrel from Midway went on easy as advertised and I was pleased until I went to the range.......same accuracy problems. What I'm suggesting is,it's not the barrel.More likely its the fit to the reciever or reciever to stock.Mine looks slightly crooked in the stock.Anyway'check into that before rebarreling
