A 308 kicked my butt!

I put my Swede against a 308 on a penetration test - wet phone books again!

But it was fair, he took the left side and I did the right side so the medium was
the same. The 308 did nearly three inches more with a 180gr than my 160gr.

At least my friends rifle kicked him more - not much but it did!!

What was your friend shooting??  Give us some more info. What bullets?  spitzers? RNs?  distance? handloads? factory?

S6.5, I'll let you do the same challenge with my 264Win and see which one penetrates the deepest.  The reason I say this is probably the difference in velocity between the two cartridges, combined with the extra twenty grains of bullet weight of the 30 cal.

Sweet 6.5 very interesting, how many inches of penetration did the two different rifles achieve, and at what range.

My assumption is the 160-grain bullet was one of your Hornady’s? How about some details regarding the .308 bullet?

I need to start collecting a few old phone books and do some testing.  I can sure think of a number of combinations to try.

An interesting option would be your 140-Speer load compared to your 160-grain load.

  Cool - technical stuff!

The shooting was done at 30 yards, +- 17 inches of wet phone books , then 3 inches dry ones and then 1 inch of pine .
We had no tape measure there - so the 2 inches he won by is a actually 3/4 of a phone book - about 2 inches.

My friend has a CZ .308 and was using our local PMP Pro-am in 180gr.(Soft point spitzer) It work much like Hornady's interlock
with the midsection of the jacked thicker. But not enough for me to classify them as premium bullets, but definitely
stronger than their normal cup and core bullets. He has been using them since PMP started making then years ago and swears by them.
I think it worked so well because he mostly do short range hunting and over the crony they only ave. 2370 fps. out of his rifle.

I used a 160gr Hornady - and they shocked my by ave. only 2250 fps. I changed powders in the mean time now and 2400 fps is no problem with improved accuracy.
At the lower speed the 160's penetrate about 1.5 inches more than the 140 Speers. I haven't done a test at the higher speed but I am also sure I will get some better penetration.

But the best part is that 0.264 Hornady round nose opened up to be just as big as the .308, and much bigger than the 140's ( Speer and Interlocks) and it still retained 75 % (120gr) 
Maybe it was not apples against apples - I used a bullet designed to open quickly and cause serious damage from the beginning (and it does) against a bullet strengthened for penetration.
I still thought my magic wand would beat his .308!

PS. Just to bring him back to earth (and to get the last word in) I shot the "test medium" with the a 140gr Rhino (core bonded solid shank like the Trophy bonded Bear Claw). It went through all the wet paper, dry phone book and the 1 inch pine used as backing. The wound channel is not as impressive as with the 160's but not too shabby either. I know - apples with apples but he was the one with only apples when I took the orange out!

Back around 1950 I was awed by the effects of a 180-grain WW Silvertip fired from a 30-40 Krag.  A hunting partner of my Dad’s had made a perfect Texas Heart shot on a buck.  The bullet passed between the hams without noticeable damage, and exited behind the front shoulder.  When the deer was skinned out the hole where the bullet exited was about 2-inches in diameter. 

I’ll pass on an uninjured deer if it comes to shooting at the behind.  Others have a different view on the practice, and they put meat table.  A noted woodsman who worked for me was one such person.  His rifle of choice was a Remington 760 in 30-06.  He hunted thick brush fields where others would not try to enter.  He told me he favored the 180-grain bullet because it broke deer down.  He consistently brought deer home while other failed. 

An older friend whom I have written about in the past first hunted with his Savage 99 in .303 Savage using 190-grain bullets.  When the new Winchester 88 came out he purchased one and choose to use 180-grain bullets.  His favorite shot was behind the shoulder.  I dogged a number of brush fields from which he collected deer with the 180-grain .308 bullet.
