Thinking about becoming a trapper-any tips or suggestions
« on: January 30, 2008, 05:09:34 PM »
I have heard alot about trapping and have gained an interest.  I think i would like to try it next season but im unsure of exactly what i should try to get.  I see that alot of people trap to sell the fur but what do others do?? is it all about the money??  anyway, i would like to start smaller i guess. I do tend to have muskrats around well actually in my backyard, but i would like to try for other animals such as coons and fox. Probably work my way up to cats and coyotes.  Also trapping rabbits...is that legal in NY.  So what kind of traps would help in most cases or am i looking at many different types, also what is an effective number of traps to set?

First thing to do-decide which animal or animals you are going to pursue. Then read and learn everything about them, that you can.
Then get a copy of your trapping regulations--this will tell you tell you your jawspread limitations.
You will need these before you purchase any traps.

joker besides   what Bog  mentioned another thing you should do is find your states trapping association and  register for  trappers education.  This will give you a heads up on information and possibly you can find a mentor  to help you on your trapline... this will save you alot of headaches in doing things the wrong way... good luck and  happy learning.  Lee

What Tom and Lee have told you is good information.
If you try to start out chasing several different animals with no help your headed for frustration. There is a ton of good info here and there are books and videos out there too. But if you can get in a trapper-ed class or go to your state trapper convention. Then you can decide which animal to target first so you'll increase your chance for success.
Without some serious reading or hands on help the whole thing can get a bit over whelming.

Some states require that you take a trappers education course, before you are allowed to trap.
I took an instructors course and am certified to teach trappers ed in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
It is my belief that everyone benefits from mandatory trappers education.
